Job description
The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, we combine biology and engineering for health, nutrition, sustainable chemistry, the environment, and climate protection. We develop processes, technologies, and products for patient-centered healthcare, a sustainable bioeconomy, and a climate-neutral and resource-efficient circular economy, bringing new solutions successfully to industrial implementation. We conduct research at the Stuttgart, Biberach, Leuna, and Straubing sites and in close collaboration with numerous universities and research institutions at home and abroad.
Your curiosity leads you into the exciting world of bio-inspired chemistry. Here, you will contribute significantly to the production of new bio-based plastic monomers for coating applications. The goal of the thesis is the synthesis and characterization of new methacrylate plastics based on the natural substance group of monoterpenes.
- You will independently develop multi-step synthesis processes that include oxidation and reduction reactions as well as esterification processes.
- You will characterize and analyze the products of chemical synthesis using common analytical methods such as NMR spectroscopy and GC-MS.
- With a systematic approach to experimental design, you will carry out radical polymerizations and characterize the polymers.
- Additionally, you will analyze the structure-property relationships between the monomer structures and the resulting material properties of the polymers.
What you bring to the table
- You are an enrolled Master's student in Chemistry or a comparable field.
- You have successfully completed your Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with a focus on Organic Synthesis.
- You are proficient in both German and English, spoken and written.
- Last but not least, you excel with a team-oriented, careful, and responsible work style, as well as the ability to work independently and scientifically.
What you can expect
- Cutting-edge research in a wide variety of pioneering flagship projects that advance society, the economy - and yourself.
- The chance to contribute your own ideas as part of a strong team and find solutions for pressing future questions.
- A tolerant environment with an open culture of mistakes and the assurance of receiving support at any time.
- State-of-the-art equipment.
- A cafeteria on campus with daily meal offerings.
For the preparation of the Master's thesis, no remuneration is paid. We offer comprehensive supervision and support. Additionally, there is the possibility of concluding a contract as a Research Assistant. The remuneration is based on the overall company agreement for the employment of assistants.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' competencies and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, worldview, disability, as well as sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons will be given preference if equally qualified.
