What They Do
Wabash Valley Power Alliance (WVPA) is a not-for-profit generation-and-transmission electric cooperative that supplies wholesale power to 23 member distribution cooperatives across Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, serving more than 330,000 homes, farms, schools, and businesses through these members (source: linkedin.com, wvpa.com). Founded in 1963 and headquartered in Indianapolis since 1976, WVPA focuses on wholesale electric power supply, power procurement, generation and transmission operations, and member support services including energy efficiency and cooperative solar programs (source: indeed.com, linkedin.com). The cooperative model emphasizes long-term wholesale supply agreements, shared services, and risk management to ensure stable pricing for its member systems rather than direct retail sales (source: wvpa.com, indeed.com). WVPA has also played a key role in establishing regional cooperative initiatives such as ACES, Touchstone Energy, and MISO, highlighting its focus on utility-scale market participation and cooperative collaboration (source: linkedin.com).
Projects & Track Record
A significant recent project for WVPA was the March 2025 joint acquisition of the St. Joseph Energy Center, a 720-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas power plant located in New Carlisle, Indiana, approximately 15 miles west of South Bend. This acquisition was made in partnership with Hoosier Energy, with each cooperative holding a 50% stake and sharing operation and maintenance responsibilities for the facility (source: hoosierenergy.com, nrucfc.coop). WVPA's 2024 financial statements also reference a 2025 asset sale related to comprehensive settlement agreements and the finalization of purchase accounting for an acquisition process underway at the end of 2024, indicating active asset portfolio management (source: wvpa.com).
Recent Developments
In June 2023, WVPA expanded its leadership team and introduced a new division aimed at enhancing service to its member cooperatives across Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, reflecting ongoing regional engagement and organizational growth (source: wvpa.com). The March 2025 joint purchase of the St. Joseph Energy Center with Hoosier Energy marked a major asset addition, strengthening WVPA's generation capacity and operational footprint (source: hoosierenergy.com). Additionally, WVPA's 2024 financial disclosures indicate ongoing acquisition activities and asset sales, demonstrating active portfolio management and strategic positioning within the cooperative power sector (source: wvpa.com).
Working There
Wabash Valley Power Alliance offers roles primarily in power supply, energy services, business development, contract administration, operations, and executive leadership, reflecting the cooperative's focus on wholesale power and member support functions (source: linkedin.com, linkedin.com). The company culture is strongly cooperative and member-focused, emphasizing reliability, collaboration, and service to member systems, with a professional utility environment characterized by long-tenured staff and opportunities for internal mobility across power supply and commercial functions (source: linkedin.com, indeed.com). WVPA's leadership, including President and CEO Jeff Conrad since April 2022, reflects experienced management with deep cooperative sector expertise (source: linkedin.com).
