Job description

Got an engineer's brain, a salesperson's DNA, and an appetite to make a real impact?

MGA Thermal is doing some pretty extraordinary things in the clean energy space. And they're looking for someone equally ambitious to help take their technology to market.

This is a rare opportunity to join an Australian clean energy innovator at a pivotal stage of its growth.

You'll work alongside experienced commercial leaders, get exposure to some seriously big industrial players and play a hands-on role in building the company's commercial future.

And the best part? They're prepared to invest in the right person.

Founded in Newcastle in 2019, MGA Thermal has developed breakthrough thermal energy storage technology that's tackling one of industry's biggest challenges - replacing fossil fuels with reliable, affordable, clean heat.

With strong investment and financial backing, an operational commercial demonstration plant, and a major energy storage project progressing in WA, MGA Thermal is moving from groundbreaking innovation to large-scale commercialisation.

Think major food and beverage producers, manufacturers, agricultural processors and some of the country's biggest energy users.

The opportunity is enormous. And there's plenty of work to be done.

Where you come in

This is an interesting mix of business development, technical sales and commercial operations.

Working closely with MGA's Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Business Development, you'll help turn market opportunities into actual projects.

One day, you'll be researching new markets, identifying potential customers or tracking major industrial projects. The next, you're preparing a tender, building a commercial proposal or sitting in front of a prospective customer talking through their energy challenges.

You'll get your hands into everything from market mapping, financial modelling and pipeline development to customer engagement, sales processes and commercial negotiations.

It's a unique opportunity to learn the commercial ropes from experienced industry leaders while making a meaningful contribution from day one.

And as MGA grows, so will you.

You

  • Technical brain. Commercial mindset. Ideally a qualified engineer, with sales DNA and a knack for the business strategy.
  • A few runs on the board. You've got exposure to technical sales, business development and commercial operations.
  • You connect the dots. From market research and number crunching to translating complex technical solutions into compelling commercial proposals.
  • You know your audience. Equally comfortable talking technical details with engineers and commercial opportunities with customers.
  • Energy experience? Brilliant. Renewables, power or industrial technology would be a bonus. Genuine passion for the clean energy transition is a must.
  • A builder, not a passenger. You're ambitious, adaptable and thrive on rolling up your sleeves rather than waiting to be told what to do.

Most of all, you're hungry to learn, ready to step up and excited by the prospect of helping take groundbreaking technology to the world.

A rare chance to develop your renewable energy career alongside some seriously impressive industry minds. An opportunity to get involved in technology that will fundamentally change how industry uses energy.

About MGA Thermal

Company Overview

Name

MGA Thermal

Headquarters

Tomago, NSW, Australia

Founded

2019

Size

Approximately 40 employees at its manufacturing plant (source: newcastle.edu.au)

What They Do

MGA Thermal is an Australian clean-energy innovator specializing in electro-thermal energy storage technology that stores electricity as heat and later delivers it as industrial-grade steam and process heat (source: mgathermal.com). Their proprietary product, Miscibility Gap Alloy (MGA) Blocks, are engineered solid-state phase-change materials designed to absorb energy when heated and release it as latent heat, enabling efficient thermal energy storage (source: nzea.govt.nz). MGA Thermal’s systems can electrify process heat up to 550°C and pressures exceeding 80 bar, targeting heavy industry, manufacturing, and other sectors requiring high-temperature steam and thermal energy (source: mgathermal.com). The company manufactures MGA Blocks in Australia and operates as an OEM, collaborating with EPC firms and developers to deliver turnkey solutions and Heat-as-a-Service models (source: mgathermal.com). Their technology offers a compact footprint and long-duration thermal storage, with industry reports highlighting up to 200% more energy delivery than conventional heat storage and up to 24 times less footprint than batteries (source: energy-storage.news).

Projects & Track Record

MGA Thermal’s flagship project is a 5 MWh steam-integrated demonstration plant located at its Tomago facility, commissioned in April 2025 (source: mgathermal.com). This plant features a 0.5 MW electric charge capacity, 0.5 MW thermal discharge, 5 MWh thermal storage, and produces 365°C superheated steam with a 10-hour storage duration, supported by AU$3.75 million funding from ARENA (source: mgathermal.com). The demonstration plant has operated successfully since commissioning, achieving zero lost-time injuries, repeated cycling stability, and continuous 24-hour operation with simultaneous charge and discharge (source: mgathermal.com). In 2026, MGA Thermal partnered with Knode Pty Ltd to conduct a FEED study for a 195 MWh thermal storage project at Tronox’s Kwinana facility in Western Australia, described as Australia’s largest industrial-scale thermal storage project and supported by AU$2.9 million from ARENA (source: linkedin.com). Additionally, MGA Thermal has secured nearly AU$23 million from over a dozen investors and counts Chevron as a customer for a clean steam solution study using a 5 MWh trial unit (source: newcastle.edu.au).

Recent Developments

In 2026, MGA Thermal advanced its manufacturing capabilities by commissioning a 3rd-generation automated production line at its Tomago headquarters, capable of producing over 1 MWh of MGA Blocks daily, approximately 1,000 blocks per day (source: mgathermal.com). This production line is integrated with a planned 5 MWh storage system at the same site (source: mgathermal.com). In March 2026, MGA Thermal raised AU$17 million in new investment led by IP Group Australia, aimed at expanding its workforce, manufacturing capacity, and customer projects over the following two years, with Shane Meaney joining the board (source: linkedin.com). Furthermore, in April 2026, the company received AU$3.25 million in federal government funding through ARENA to support up to five FEED studies for commercializing its thermal energy storage technology (source: energy-storage.news).

Working There

MGA Thermal offers career opportunities primarily in manufacturing, materials science, engineering, project development, and commercial deployment of thermal energy storage systems, reflecting its focus on deep-tech commercialization and industrial decarbonisation (source: mgathermal.com). The company’s central hiring location is its Tomago facility, where roles span block manufacturing, ETES system design, EPC coordination, project studies, and product commercialization (source: mgathermal.com). MGA Thermal encourages candidates to follow its LinkedIn page and subscribe to its careers and announcements mailing lists to stay informed about new job opportunities (source: mgathermal.com). The company culture emphasizes innovation in clean energy, building manufacturing capabilities in the Hunter region, and advancing industrial-scale thermal energy storage solutions (source: newcastle.edu.au).
