The Team
Ireland's offshore grid programme is a critical national infrastructure initiative supporting the country's 2030 renewable energy targets. EirGrid, as the designated Offshore Asset Owner (OAO), is responsible for ensuring the timely delivery, readiness, and operation of offshore transmission assets. The Offshore Programme Management Office (PMO) and Offshore Phase 1 Delivery Team play a central role in coordinating this transformation, ensuring robust governance, regulatory alignment, and delivery assurance across a multi-billion euro capital programme.
The Offshore Asset Readiness Programme (OARP) is responsible for ensuring EirGrid is operationally ready to assume ownership and management of offshore transmission assets. Cybersecurity is a critical capability within OARP, ensuring offshore infrastructure is designed, delivered, and handed over in compliance with statutory obligations, regulatory requirements, and industry best practice. The Offshore Cybersecurity Systems Specialist will play a key role in establishing and maturing EirGrid's offshore cybersecurity capability in support of critical national infrastructure.
The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to join the offshore organisation as a Offshore HV Systems Specialist, providing technical leadership and engineering assurance for offshore transmission infrastructure and associated onshore network connection assets.
The role will be responsible for supporting the lifecycle management, technical governance, operational readiness, and long-term performance of:
- Offshore HV AC substations & related components
- Offshore platform electrical systems.
- EHV, HV and MV cable systems
- Onshore compensation compounds.
- Reactive compensation systems, including shunt reactors, STATCOMs, SVCs, and harmonic filters.
- Grid interface substations and associated protection, control, telecommunications, and ancillary systems.
The Offshore HV Systems Specialist will act as a subject matter expert for these asset classes, ensuring that infrastructure developed is designed, constructed, tested, commissioned, accepted, and maintained in accordance with EirGrid asset policies, engineering standards, and operational requirements. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of technical knowledge, influencing critical engineering decisions across a complex and evolving offshore transmission portfolio.
About you
Essential
- Electrical engineering degree or equivalent, typically with 10+ years relevant experience
- Significant experience in offshore transmission infrastructure and substations
- Offshore HV transmission design expertise and with ability to assess HV transmission designs for conformity to standards and requirements
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT, commissioning, energisation, and operational acceptance of high-voltage transmission assets
- Understanding of asset management principles, reliability engineering, asset lifecycle management, and operational readiness processes
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical matters to non-technical audiences and senior decision-makers
- Ability to coach and develop high performance capabilities in a changing and dynamic environment
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status
- Experience within an offshore transmission asset owner, transmission utility, offshore wind developer, or offshore infrastructure operator
- Experience supporting asset handover and transition from project delivery into operations
- Knowledge of offshore maintenance strategies, reliability-centred maintenance, and condition monitoring approaches.
We value potential as much as experience. If you believe you can succeed in this role, we encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every requirement.

Approximately 900 employees and revenue of $812.2 million in FY 2024 (source: rocketreach.co).
What They Do
EirGrid Group specializes in the operation and development of Ireland's national high-voltage electricity transmission grid. The company manages the flow of electricity from various generation sources, including a significant focus on renewable energy such as wind and solar farms, to end-users and the distribution network (source: countymeathchamber.ie). Their services encompass real-time grid operation, ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply, and planning future infrastructure upgrades. EirGrid also operates the Single Electricity Market (SEM) across Ireland and Northern Ireland, facilitating efficient energy trading (source: eirgrid.ie). The company is committed to transitioning to a grid capable of handling 80% renewable electricity by 2030, currently achieving up to 65% renewables, and aims for a 95% operational capacity in the near future (source: rocketreach.co). Their target markets include the wholesale electricity market on the Irish island, serving both large industrial users and the ESB Networks distribution system.
Projects & Track Record
EirGrid Group has a robust portfolio of projects, including the East-West Interconnector (EWIC), a high-voltage subsea link completed in 2012 that connects Ireland's grid to Great Britain with a capacity of 500 MW (source: eirgrid.ie). The company is also jointly developing the Celtic Interconnector with RTE, a significant 2 GW subsea link from Ireland to France, which is currently under construction (source: siliconrepublic.com). Additionally, EirGrid manages the Greenlink Interconnector, another vital link between Great Britain and Ireland. The North-South Interconnector is another ongoing project, which involves a high-voltage line planned across counties Monaghan, Cavan, and Meath, with landowner engagements already underway (source: cbinsights.com). EirGrid is also leading offshore wind grid development, targeting an additional 10,000 MW of renewable capacity by 2030.
Recent Developments
In 2024, EirGrid Group reported maintaining its revenue at $812.2 million while continuing its grid transformation efforts (source: rocketreach.co). The company is advancing its five-year strategy aimed at achieving 70% renewable electricity by 2030, which includes significant updates on renewable connections, particularly in offshore wind (source: energyireland.ie). Progress on the Celtic Interconnector has been highlighted by CEO Mark Foley, emphasizing its importance for Ireland's energy security in light of Brexit (source: siliconrepublic.com). While there have been no major acquisitions or new funding rounds reported since 2020, the company continues to leverage its earlier SONI acquisition and EU funding to support ongoing projects (source: cbinsights.com). EirGrid's capability to operate the grid at 65% renewables is a significant milestone as they scale towards 95% by 2030.
Working There
EirGrid Group offers a variety of roles across its operations, including positions in transmission system operations, market operations through SEMO, engineering for grid planning, and project management for infrastructure projects like offshore wind and the North-South Interconnector (source: rocketreach.co). The company has departments dedicated to EirGrid TSO, SONI, interconnectors, telecoms, and SEMO, with primary hiring occurring at their Dublin headquarters (source: cms.eirgrid.ie). EirGrid promotes a culture of diversity and collaboration, focusing on building passionate teams for renewable grid transformation and engaging with the community through initiatives like the EirGrid-GAA U20s Football Championship (source: countymeathchamber.ie).
