About this role
About BioValue
Company overview
BioValue, a private Dutch biogas company
Sint Nicolaasga, Netherlands
2007
11-50 employees (LinkedIn size category)
What they do
BioValue develops, builds, owns, operates and upgrades biogas plants that convert organic residual streams, sometimes combined with manure, into biomethane. This is marketed as green gas, bio-CNG and bio-LNG, distinguishing the company from generic solar or wind energy developers (sources: linkedin.com, biovalue.nl). The company manages the entire project process, from sourcing organic raw materials to construction, operation and maintenance of plants, and the management of gas and digestate flows (sources: biovalue.nl, linkedin.com). BioValue uses various organic inputs, including manure in the co-digestion project in Cothen and plant material without manure in Sint Nicolaasga (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl). The company uses digestate as a fertiliser substitute and supplies residual heat and CO2 to nearby greenhouse horticulture businesses (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl). BioValue serves a wide range of customers and partners, including farmers, cooperatives, waste suppliers, greenhouse horticulture, fuel and gas markets, and investors (sources: biovalue.nl, linkedin.com). The company stands out through the combination of development, construction and long-term operation, with experience in taking over and upgrading incomplete or underperforming plants (source: biovalue.nl). BioValue positions itself around third-generation biogas plants with integrated use of heat and CO2, reporting an emissions reduction of approximately 75-80% compared to fossil natural gas (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl).
Projects and track record
The original Schaap Biogas Tirns project in Friesland was built in 2007 on the Schaap family farm and has been producing green gas for the Dutch gas grid since 2011, laying the model for BioValue’s platform (source: biovalue.nl). The Schoongas Sint Nicolaasga project, taken over and rebuilt by BioValue in 2019, was the first Dutch biogas plant without operational subsidies and processes exclusively plant material; the digestate is used as a fertiliser substitute (source: biovalue.nl). Peters Biogas in Luttelgeest, expanded in 2018, produces around 10 million cubic metres of green gas per year, enough for approximately 7,000 households, and supplies residual heat and CO2 to nearby greenhouse horticulture via pipelines (source: biovalue.nl). The plant achieved a 20% production improvement after installing additional membranes (source: biovalue.nl). The Groengas Cothen project, started by eight dairy farmers in 2014, processes manure and other organic waste streams and is being completed and operated by BioValue with a planned annual output of 8 million cubic metres of green gas, operational from early 2025 (source: biovalue.nl). Groengas Brabant is a planned project starting in 2025 and was presented at the Open Energy Day 2024 in Nistelrode (source: biovalue.nl). In Amsterdam, BioValue is involved in a major port development with a biogas plant and a bio-LNG facility by partner Titan, which is called the largest bio-LNG plant in the world and processes up to 600,000 tonnes of organic waste annually (source: biovalue.nl).
Recent developments
Over the past two years, BioValue has mainly focused on project development, with four projects in development in 2022 including Amsterdam and Cothen, with Cothen continuing as a BioValue-led construction and operation project (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl). Groengas Brabant was presented in 2024 as a project starting in 2025 (source: biovalue.nl). The 20% production improvement at Peters Biogas after installing additional membranes illustrates the focus on optimising existing assets (source: biovalue.nl). The majority investment by Kanadevia Inova in 2026 marks an important step in BioValue’s transition to an internationally supported company focused on energy transition and the circular economy (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl).
Working at
Working at BioValue involves a mix of office work focused on project development and fieldwork at biogas plants. Roles include process and mechanical engineering, project development, construction management, plant operation, maintenance, environmental and permit management, logistics, commercial gas and fuel activities, finance and administration (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl). Employees work at the head office in Sint Nicolaasga and at project locations across the Netherlands (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl). The company culture is entrepreneurial and practical, with close collaboration with farmers and family businesses, and a focus on managing physical assets (source: biovalue.nl). The recent majority investment by Kanadevia Inova may lead to larger projects and more formal business processes, while maintaining the local identity and project-focused approach (sources: biovalue.nl, biovalue.nl).
