Biogas & Biomethane Jobs in Renewable Energy

Biogas and biomethane work covers anaerobic digestion, in which bacteria break down manure, food waste, sewage sludge, or crop residues into a methane-rich gas, and the upgrading plants that purify that gas to grid quality. Raw biogas is roughly 50 to 70% methane and usually burned on site in an engine; biomethane is upgraded to above 95% and injected into the gas network, where it replaces fossil gas directly.

A market short of its target

The gap between policy and production defines the market. The EU wants 35 billion cubic metres of biomethane a year by 2030, an effort the Commission prices at around €37 billion of investment. In 2024 the EU produced 4.3 bcm, according to the European Biogas Association's 2025 statistical report, within total European biogas and biomethane output of 22 bcm. Europe ended 2024 with 1,620 biomethane plants, 111 more than a year earlier. The same report warns that regulatory uncertainty is slowing investment, so growth is real but slower than the target implies, and hiring tracks national support schemes closely.

What the jobs involve

A digester is a biological process first and a gas plant second. Operators and field technicians spend their days on feeding schedules, temperature and pH control, foam, and hydrogen sulphide, because a digester that turns sour can take weeks to recover. Control room operators, shift supervisors, and maintenance technicians run the larger plants around the clock, and landfill gas sites add gas recovery technicians who tune wellfields. Upgrading brings in chemical and process engineers who work with membrane, water-scrubbing, and amine separation units, plus grid-injection specialists who meet the network operator's gas quality rules. On the commercial side, feedstock managers secure manure and food waste contracts, and traders handle the certificates and guarantees of origin that let buyers claim biomethane as renewable.

Who hires

Plant builders and service companies are the steadiest employers. agriKomp Bohemia builds and services farm biogas plants and hires energy specialists across the Czech Republic, and Denmark's Lundsby Renewable Solutions designs and builds biogas plants from Løgstrup. Anaergia designs digestion systems for municipal and industrial waste, while VORN Bioenergy in Amsterdam develops biomethane projects. In North America the work follows landfill gas and dairy manure: Ameresco converts landfill gas to renewable natural gas, and Maas Energy Works builds digesters on California dairy farms. Germany still holds the largest fleet of farm plants, and many older units are reaching the end of their 20-year feed-in tariffs, which creates work in repowering and conversion from on-site power to biomethane.

Where the field is heading

Upgrading plants separate a stream of almost pure biogenic CO2, and capturing it for industrial use or storage is becoming a second revenue line. Engineers who understand both the microbiology of digestion and the commercial rules of the gas grid, including certificates and waste-to-energy permitting, are the profile plant owners find hardest to hire. The wider bioenergy sector offers adjacent roles in biomass and liquid biofuels.
