About DTE Energy

Company Overview

DTE Energy

Three Rivers, MI, United States

1849

Approximately 9,500 to 10,000 employees (source: stockanalysis.com). Revenue details for 2023 are not specified, but DTE Energy serves 2.3 million electric and 1.3 million gas customers (source: dteenergy.com).

What They Do

DTE Energy is a diversified public utility that operates primarily in electric and natural gas distribution, while also expanding its renewable energy assets. The company generates electricity through a diverse capacity mix of 11,084 MW, which includes coal, nuclear, natural gas, hydroelectric, wind, and solar sources, serving a broad customer base across southeastern Michigan (source: dteenergy.com). DTE Gas manages natural gas distribution for approximately 1.3 million customers in Michigan, utilizing 278 storage wells, which represent the highest capacity in any U.S. state (source: dteenergy.com). The company also has non-utility segments, including DTE Vantage, which focuses on industrial energy services and renewable energy projects, alongside energy trading and environmental marketing (source: stockanalysis.com). DTE Energy's target markets primarily include residential, commercial, and industrial sectors within Michigan, while its non-utility operations extend across the United States and Canada (source: wikipedia.org). The company is recognized as Michigan's largest electric utility, leveraging its scale and integrated model to differentiate itself from pure renewable energy companies (source: dteenergy.com).

Projects & Track Record

DTE Energy has a rich history of notable projects, including the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant, which has been operational since 1973, and the Fermi 2 nuclear plant, licensed in 1988 (source: dteenergy.com). The company has also completed significant projects such as the Blue Water Energy Center, which was developed between 2018 and 2022 with a capacity of 1,150 MW, and various wind parks in the Thumb area, with the first commissioned in December 2012 (source: wikipedia.org). Current projects include the conversion of coal plants to gas at Belle River, with plans for completion in 2025 and 2026, and the retirement of coal units at Monroe by 2032 (source: wikipedia.org). Additionally, DTE Biomass Energy focuses on capturing landfill methane, and the Westside Gas Producers project in Three Rivers, MI, is a key renewable natural gas initiative (source: dtevantage.com). The company’s geographic presence is primarily in Michigan, with a focus on expanding its non-utility operations across the U.S. and Canada (source: wikipedia.org).

Recent Developments

In a significant move towards clean energy, DTE Energy retired the River Rouge coal plant on June 4, 2021, marking a milestone in its commitment to reducing carbon emissions (source: ir.dteenergy.com). This closure is part of a broader strategy to phase out coal plants, with three of five coal facilities expected to close by the end of 2022, which aligns with the company’s goal to enhance its renewable energy portfolio to power approximately 900,000 homes (source: wikipedia.org). The company is also planning gas conversions at Belle River, scheduled for completion in 2025 and 2026, as part of its transition to cleaner energy sources (source: wikipedia.org). While no specific acquisitions or mergers have been reported for 2024-2025, DTE Energy continues to operate with a focus on sustainability and innovation, with its next earnings report scheduled for February 5, 2026 (source: datainsightsmarket.com). The completion of the ESOC Building in 2021 further supports the company’s operational capabilities in grid management (source: wikipedia.org).
