Enschede, Netherlands

What they do
Bright Renewables is a technology company specialising in renewable-gas production and carbon capture systems, focusing on biogas processing, carbon dioxide recovery, and conversion of renewable gases into fuels and industrial products rather than solar, wind, or battery technologies (source: bright-renewables.com). Their core technologies include membrane-based biogas upgrading, carbon-dioxide liquefaction, bio-LNG and bio-CNG production, and post-combustion carbon capture using amine and vacuum-swing-adsorption methods (source: bright-renewables.com). Bright Renewables offers integrated services covering system design, manufacturing, installation, operation, and maintenance, serving a diverse customer base including project developers, breweries, water authorities, industrial companies, and renewable-gas operators (source: bright-renewables.com). A notable innovation is their involvement in the TANDEM project to develop renewable e-methanol production technology, collaborating with HyGear and the University of Twente to create a demonstration system producing 500 tonnes of AA-grade e-methanol annually using biogenic CO₂ and electrolytic hydrogen powered by Dutch solar and wind energy (source: bright-renewables.com).
Projects & track record
Bright Renewables has delivered over 225 renewable-gas and carbon-capture projects worldwide, including notable installations for clients such as Royal Grolsch Brewery, Aquafin, Gasum, BIOO, and Naturgy (source: bright-renewables.com). At the Royal Grolsch Brewery in Enschede, Bright financed, built, operates, and maintains a membrane-based biogas upgrading plant connected to the brewery’s wastewater treatment, producing over 1 million Nm³ of biomethane annually—enough to supply approximately 700 Dutch households (source: bright-renewables.com). In Waalwijk, the company supplied a PurePac Grand upgrading system for Wabico, processing 2,200 Nm³ of biogas per hour and producing 1,450 Nm³ of biomethane per hour with methane recovery exceeding 99.5%, serving the equivalent of 8,500 Dutch households; this plant’s CO₂-liquefaction technology was upgraded in early 2024 (source: bright-renewables.com). The Charlton Park Estate project in the UK uses a PurePac Medium system to convert organic waste and manure into biomethane, producing 570 Nm³ per hour with over 99.5% purity and methane recovery, supplying gas for more than 3,800 UK homes and avoiding 5,400 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually (source: bright-renewables.com). Other projects include biogas upgrading and CO₂ liquefaction in Heek, Germany, and the Netherlands’ first CO₂-liquefaction installation at the Houtrust wastewater-treatment plant in The Hague, demonstrating expansion into municipal wastewater infrastructure (source: bright-renewables.com).
Recent developments
In May 2024, Bright Renewables announced its participation in the TANDEM e-methanol consortium, a major strategic initiative combining its renewable-gas and CO₂ expertise with HyGear’s electrolysis technology and University of Twente research to develop a 500-tonne-per-year AA-grade e-methanol demonstration plant at HyGear’s Arnhem site, supported by nearly €4 million in subsidies against an €8 million investment (source: bright-renewables.com). Early 2024 also saw the completion of a CO₂-liquefaction upgrade at the Wabico facility in Waalwijk, enhancing the existing biomethane operation with CO₂ liquefaction using CO₂ as the refrigerant (source: bright-renewables.com). Bright continues to expand its food-grade bio-CO₂ production capabilities, renewable-gas-as-a-service offerings, and integrated biomethane projects, exemplified by the Grolsch installation which combines financing, construction, operation, maintenance, and biomethane sales in a comprehensive service model (source: bright-renewables.com).
Working there
Bright Renewables’ workforce is primarily engaged in engineering and project delivery, encompassing roles in process, mechanical, and electrical engineering, automation and controls, gas treatment, refrigeration, liquefaction, carbon capture, commissioning, operations, maintenance, project management, sales, and customer service (source: bright-renewables.com). Research and development is integral to the company, with in-house development of methanol-reactor technology and proprietary membrane upgrading and carbon capture systems, supporting activities from applied research and pilot demonstrations to industrial plant design and commercial project execution (source: bright-renewables.com). The company’s headquarters in Enschede serves as the main employment base, with collaboration nearby at the University of Twente, while projects require international travel and coordination across Europe and the Americas (source: linkedin.com). The culture is practical and project-oriented, exposing technical staff to the full project lifecycle from design and fabrication through commissioning, operations, maintenance, and commercial performance (source: bright-renewables.com).
