Job description

To start as soon as possible, full time, permanent

As part of the Innovation & Industrialisation Projects Team, you will manage a portfolio of technical innovation projects focused on sustainability and biodiversity. The primary emphasis is on research and innovation that help understand and improve the impacts of offshore wind farms on sensitive marine and coastal species and habitats. You will connect emerging technologies with project needs, ecological context, auction criteria, consent requirements and RWE Offshore's strategic sustainability priorities.

About the role

  • Shape and manage the sustainability and biodiversity innovation area while supporting the Innovation & Industrialisation Team Lead and Sustainability Programme Manager.
  • Act as the primary innovation interface for biodiversity topics and build strong working relationships across central teams, projects, Development, Engineering, Consents and Operations.
  • Identify, assess, prioritise and deliver innovation projects and pilots that create portfolio-wide value through auction success, consent compliance, cost and risk reduction, and biodiversity-positive solutions.
  • Develop and maintain technology maturation plans for priority biodiversity topics, including nature-inclusive scour and cable protection and innovative underwater monitoring.
  • Represent RWE in the development, delivery and communication of collaborative research and innovation programmes and pilot projects.
  • Plan, prioritise and execute activities independently in close cooperation with Chief Engineers, the Sustainability Team and relevant discipline experts.
  • Provide senior stakeholders with concise, decision-ready advice and represent RWE externally through clear, evidence-based positions on technical biodiversity matters.
  • Manage project portfolios, budgets, schedules, quality, HSE, external service providers, contracts, knowledge transfer and intellectual property through to business implementation.

Job requirements and experience

  • Completed university degree in engineering, natural sciences, ecology, marine biology or a comparable discipline.
  • At least five years of professional experience.
  • Very good knowledge of global sustainability trends relevant to the offshore wind sector.
  • Knowledge of marine monitoring technologies or emerging concepts such as Nature Positive and Marine Net Gain.
  • Sound understanding of applied project management principles, processes and techniques.
  • Experience in building, motivating and coordinating goal-focused networks or project teams.
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, technical and commercial judgement combined with an independent and results-oriented approach.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and senior-level stakeholder management skills, business-fluent English and good MS Office skills.

Advantageous, but not essential

  • Experience in energy technology.
  • Professional experience in offshore and sustainability.
  • Experience in marine biology or ornithology.
  • German or other additional language skills.

What They Do

RWE is a leading German energy company with a diverse portfolio focused on power generation and energy infrastructure projects. The company operates offshore and onshore wind farms, solar photovoltaic plants, battery storage systems, as well as flexible gas-fired power plants, and invests heavily in hydrogen technologies. In 2025, 41% of its power generation came from renewable energy sources, while gas and coal accounted for 31% and 27% respectively (source: rwe.com). With an installed capacity of 46.8 GW at the end of 2025, including 3.3 GW offshore wind and 1.7 GW battery storage, RWE ranks among the world’s largest developers in these sectors (source: rwe.com). The company focuses on developing and operating energy assets for utilities, industrial customers, and market participants, distinguished by its scale, broad technology range, and strong presence in the North Sea and US markets (source: rwe.com).

Projects & Track Record

RWE delivers numerous large-scale renewable energy projects, including the 1,400 MW Sofia offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom, the 1,080 MW Thor project in Denmark, and the North Sea clusters A and B in Germany with capacities of 660 MW and 900 MW respectively (source: rwe.com). In total, five major wind farms are under construction in the North Sea, adding around 3.1 GW of generation capacity (source: rwe.com). In the US, RWE commissioned six renewable energy projects totaling 999 MW in 2025, including wind, solar, and battery storage facilities across four states (source: rwe.com). In Lingen, Germany, RWE is building a 300 MW electrolyzer as part of the GET H2 Nukleus project, along with a 34 MW hydrogen-compatible gas turbine for reconversion of green hydrogen to power (source: rwe.com). Additionally, RWE operates Megabattery 117+, one of Germany’s largest battery storage systems, used in wholesale and balancing markets (source: rwe.com).

Recent Developments

In 2025, RWE commissioned 2.8 GW of new power plant capacity, investing approximately €10.8 billion gross, bringing the installed capacity to 46.8 GW (source: rwe.com). For the period 2026 to 2031, the company plans net investments of €35 billion to expand renewable energy, battery storage, and flexible power plant capacity by 25 GW to around 65 GW (source: rwe.com). This includes €9 billion for flexible backup and large battery projects, as well as up to 3 GW of hydrogen-capable gas power plants in Germany, plus €7 billion for onshore wind and solar in Europe and Australia (source: rwe.com). Offshore wind capacity reached 3.3 GW pro rata at the end of 2025, and five UK projects secured government contracts with expected capacity up to 6.9 GW, of which RWE holds 3.5 GW (source: rwe.com).
