Cells are the core of our home energy hardware products. Cell Engineers at Lunar Energy will be characterizing, modeling, and validating our current products as well as being at the forefront of cell technology. As a Cell Test Engineer, you will support these activities and will be expected to own/execute projects from beginning to end, focusing on robust test plan development and execution.

On a given day at Lunar, you’ll likely…

  • Develop and execute comprehensive cell-level test plans, including multi-DUT setups, to support new product validation from early development through to manufacturing and field failure analysis
  • Write and optimize test scripts on Arbin and Neware battery cyclers to automate and enhance cell characterization and life cycle testing.
  • Perform core cell characterization tests such as DCIR, SOC/OCV, HPPC, and other relevant electrochemical tests to assess cell performance and degradation.
  • Analyze and interpret cell failure modes to provide technical support to Manufacturing Quality and field failure investigations.
  • Design and implement life cycle validation testing matrices, considering key factors affecting cell degradation and performance.
  • Manage and maintain cell test data and supporting SQL database infrastructure, ensuring data integrity, accessibility, and leveraging data to inform critical decisions.
  • Work cross-functionally with technicians, mechanical, and electrical engineers to execute and improve testing processes to ensure that the data generated is accurate and actionable
  • Process and analyze test data using various software tools, including Python and SQL, to generate detailed test reports and presentations for key stakeholders.
  • Optimize the data flow from Neware/Arbin cyclers into SQL databases, proposing and implementing improvements to enhance data management and analysis.
  • Maintain and contribute to a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.

Desired Skills

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc), Materials Science, Physics, or equivalent evidenced by demonstrated ability.
  • Proven experience with battery testers and software (Maccor, Arbin, Neware, etc.), & proficiency in scripting on Arbin and Neware battery cyclers.
  • Deep understanding of core cell characterization tests (DCIR, SOC/OCV, HPPC, etc.) and their application in validation testing and battery pack firmware development
  • Experience in designing and executing life cycle validation testing matrices.
  • Strong understanding of cell failure modes and experience in providing technical support for failure analysis.
  • proficiency in SQL, with the ability to manage, optimize, and improve database infrastructure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong statistics and probability fundamentals.

Our Compensation Philosophy

Our goal is to ensure that all Lunar Energy employees are fairly compensated. Please note that the salary range information that follows is a good faith estimate for this position provided pursuant to the Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act for California applicants. The salary range estimate for this position depending on level of experience is: $130,000 - $150,000 USD.

The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package & benefits, will be at the company’s sole discretion, and determined by factors including but not limited to years of experience, job level, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations. The company also reserves the right to amend or modify this job description, employee perks, and benefits at any time.
