Job Description
Solar Provider Group (SPG) develops large-scale solar projects across North America and Europe. We identify suitable sites, secure land agreements, and manage permitting and regulatory approvals to bring projects to the point of construction. By working closely with landowners, communities, and industry partners, we ensure projects are well-positioned for success. With a deep understanding of market dynamics and regulatory frameworks in each region, our team navigates the complexities of solar development to create viable, bankable projects that support the expansion of renewable energy.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for an organized and analytical Interconnection Coordinator to manage utility and ISO relationships, oversee all interconnection applications and communications, and support project development with market research and grid feasibility assessments. This role is key to securing queue positions, minimizing upgrade risks, and keeping our project pipeline moving.
This position offers flexibility as either a fully remote or hybrid role (for candidates based in the Toronto area). Our Toronto office is located in Liberty Village in Toronto, Ontario. Any remote work arrangements are subject to change based on company needs with appropriate notice.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, submit, and coordinate interconnection pre-applications and applications to electric utilities for distributed generation (DG) and utility-scale solar projects in the United States and Canada.
- Assess the interconnection potential of prospective sites and advise the land acquisition team on site viability.
- Develop geographic information system (GIS) models (using ArcGIS Pro and other tools) to visualize the location and timing of interconnection screening applications.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date interconnection queue trackers.
- Keep organized records of all interconnection applications, studies, agreements, payments, and communications in project folders.
- Create and maintain dashboards summarizing key interconnection application data.
- Develop tools to monitor periodic changes at substation nodes and track interconnection queues.
- Review and manage interconnection contracts to identify risks and support project de-risking.
- Ensure compliance with utility interconnection standards across all jurisdictions.
- Promptly submit interconnection applications to secure favorable queue positions.
- Coordinate and facilitate payments to utilities as required.
- Act as the primary point of contact between Solar Provider Group and electric utilities and independent system operators (ISOs), such as PJM Interconnection, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), New England ISO (ISO-NE), Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
- Build and maintain relationships with key utility contacts to gain insights beyond publicly available information.
- Obtain regular updates on application status, resolve issues, and escalate delays internally and externally as needed.
- Identify potential interconnection upgrade risks early and develop strategies to reduce project costs.
- Explore and assess strategies to expedite grid connection, such as flexible interconnection, solar-plus-storage solutions, and cost-sharing opportunities with other projects.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience with electrical grid interconnections.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, electrical, power systems, or a related field.
- Understanding of core concepts in electrical and power system engineering.
- Ability to interpret and summarize utility requirements and technical documents.
- Experience with data management and analysis.
- Familiarity or experience working with publicly owned utilities, investor-owned utilities, independent system operators, regional transmission operators, load-serving entities, local distribution companies, public utility commissions, and regulatory bodies in the United States is an asset.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly to the United States to support project development activities.
