Careers at Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Senior Industrial Engineer

CFS aims to be the fastest, surest path to clean, limitless, fusion energy – in time to make a difference for climate change. In pursuit of that goal, we have ramped up a production factory to build many of the major assemblies that make up SPARC – our fusion power plant prototype. We aspire to run a lean, efficient production operation and we are looking to hire a senior industrial engineer to lead continuous improvement of our manufacturing processes as we work towards that aspiration. This role collaborates with our Production, Quality, Supply Chain, and IT/EIS (enterprise information systems) teams to improve our processes, remove roadblocks, and enhance operational efficiency in support of the overarching mission.

What you'll do

  • Lead cross-functional continuous improvement projects to rapidly improve manufacturing processes for the company’s critical product lines
  • Develop strategies and business processes to grow and scale our manufacturing, quality, and supply chain operations from R&D to full-scale production with a focus on reducing waste, improving product quality, increasing productivity, and improving employee quality of life
  • Identify, analyze, and improve bottlenecks on the production floor and in business processes through data collection, process flows, value stream mapping, and root cause analysis
  • Create standards, templates, and processes to mature the organization for production operations using tools such as Lean Six Sigma, value stream mapping, PFMEAs (process failure mode and effects analysis), 8D problem solving, change control plans, etc.
  • Grow a company culture focused on continuous improvement. Author and facilitate training for the company on topics including Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and DFM (design for manufacturability)
  • Support factory layout and simulation modeling and build out of future manufacturing facilities
  • Work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of design engineers, manufacturing engineers, technicians, quality specialists, and supply chain specialists to brainstorm and innovate on efficient operations for the company

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or operations management
  • 5+ years' experience as an industrial, lean, continuous improvement, or manufacturing engineer in an industrial production environment
  • Experience developing processes and procedures to transition from R&D into production
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt (or equivalent experience)
  • Proficiency in continuous improvement methods and tools such as Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, 5S, DMAIC, etc.
  • Project management experience working with cross-functional teams to deliver projects with desired results within specified budgets and timelines
  • Experience as a project facilitator and/or trainer
  • Strong drive for continuous improvement and operational efficiency
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration
  • Data-driven decision making

Bonus points

  • Experience with Atlassian products including JIRA and Confluence
  • Experience with ERP (enterprise resource planning) and MES (manufacturing execution system) software

Essential Requirements

  • Perform activities such as stooping, typing, standing, sitting, or for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally

$110,000 - $185,000 a year

Salary range for this full-time position + equity + benefits. The actual salary will depend on level, location, qualifications, and experience. The range displayed on each job posting reflects new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Benefits include:

  • Competitive compensation with equity
  • 12.5 Company-wide Holidays
  • Flexible vacation days
  • 10 sick days
  • Generous parental leave policy
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with employer matching
  • Professional growth opportunities
  • Team-building activities

At CFS, we excel in fast-paced environments, driven by our values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we grow, we’re eager to bring on mission-driven folks who offer diverse perspectives and fresh ways to tackle challenges.

We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice.
