Data Science & Analytics Jobs in Renewable Energy

Data science and analytics covers the statistical modelling, forecasting, machine learning, and business intelligence that turn energy data into decisions: how much a wind farm will produce tomorrow, which inverter is about to fail, and what a battery should bid. The payoff is large and still mostly unrealised. The IEA's Energy and AI report estimates that sensors and AI-based management could unlock up to 175 GW of transmission capacity without a single new line, and that AI fault detection can cut outage durations by 30 to 50%, while noting that AI skills are far less common in the energy sector than in other industries.

What data scientists and analysts do

The roles divide by the question they answer. Forecasters predict generation and demand from minutes to seasons ahead, combining numerical weather models with plant data; the work overlaps with resource and generation forecasting and feeds directly into energy trading, where a better forecast is worth money every hour. Performance analysts compare what solar and wind assets produced with what they should have produced, and trace the difference to soiling, availability, curtailment, or a failing component. Market and quantitative analysts model prices, hedges, and the value of flexibility.

Business analysts and BI developers make up the other half of the field. Utilities and suppliers need dashboards on customer churn, billing, and network performance, and those roles are often the most accessible entry point for graduates. Across all of them the expected toolkit is Python and SQL, with probabilistic forecasting, time-series methods, and machine learning at the more senior end, and clean inputs from data engineering teams as the precondition for everything else.

Employers hiring data scientists

Large utilities employ the most analysts. AGL Energy in Australia, NextEra Energy and EDP Renewables in the United States, and Ørsted and Vattenfall in Europe all hire data scientists for generation, trading, and retail. Software companies make up the second group: Power Factors builds asset performance software for renewable fleets, Gridmatic uses machine learning to trade power and optimise batteries, and Landis+Gyr analyses metering data at utility scale. UK supplier OVO Energy and the German digital supplier Rabot Energy hire analysts for pricing and customer products.

London is the largest market by some distance, followed by Berlin and Hamburg, and Glasgow and Bristol, both home to large energy suppliers, rank high as well. Battery storage has become a niche of its own, with titles such as manager of AI solutions and analytics for battery storage appearing alongside the classic data scientist role.

Skills that command a premium

Domain knowledge is what moves pay. A data scientist who understands how the balancing market settles, why a turbine's power curve drifts in icing conditions, or how a battery degrades with each cycle produces models that survive contact with the real asset. Probabilistic forecasts, which give a range with probabilities rather than a single number, are now expected wherever a model feeds trading or grid balancing.

The IEA's point about the skills gap cuts both ways. Energy companies compete with technology firms for the same modelling talent, which leaves the candidates who already combine data science with power-market or asset knowledge in a strong negotiating position.
