Job Summary

Responsible for the planning, management, and execution of multiple large-scale capital (construction support or construction related) projects throughout the Corporation. Decisions are based on optimizing these projects' value, and providing a safe, productive and cost-effective physical environment. Considers relevant external trends and conditions in achieving competitive advantages whenever possible. Negotiates complex vendor contracts and ensures compliance with their specifications. Span of control: typically, = 10 Jobs and FTEs (direct and 2nd level).

Key Accountabilities

  • Leads a team(s) of project managers, supervisors, contractors, and administrative and engineering support personnel in construction activities for multiple intermediate to large-sized capital projects. Accountable for construction projects' safety, quality, schedule and financial results.
  • Manages a portfolio team consisting of project managers, project engineers, construction managers, schedulers, estimators, planners, first-line supervisors, general foremen, superintendents, and technical and administrative support personnel as necessary; secures labor to implement project; ensures portfolio team is trained to execute the capital projects effectively and productively.
  • Negotiates complex construction and physical plant-related contracts with large vendors; oversee the execution of contracts, ensuring the contractors' performance consistent with contractual terms and specifications.
  • Provides support to senior management in the formulation of strategic planning, staffing, budgeting, continuous improvement and achieving company goals; ensures that the strategic plan and actions are completed as planned.
  • Responsible for delivering major capital construction projects, without interruption to the Company's operations; key liaison with stakeholders in coordinating construction necessitated contingencies.
  • Provides regular progress reports for all construction projects, highlighting key performance indicators, risk management, delays and claims, disputes, workarounds, and accurate cost and schedule forecasts.
  • Analyzes organizational capability in relation to Company-determined project management standards (through the Project Management Maturity Assessment Model and the Project Management Institute Body of Knowledge); maintains professional affiliations with industry groups, professional agencies and societies, and stays abreast of industry best practices. Implements continuous improvement countermeasures to address any gaps.
  • Performs or ensures the accomplishment of the following core supervisory/management functions for a given group(s) within a business unit: planning, organizing, directing the performance of on-going activities and/or special or ad hoc assignments, staffing (employee selection, training, coaching and performance management, time entry), coordinating, reporting and budgeting.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

This is a multi-track-based job; education and experience requirements can be satisfied through one of the following options:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, construction management, project management, or business/management and 10 years of project management experience, inclusive of 3 years of formal leadership experience. Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is required or must be obtained within one-year of entry into the position; OR
  • Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, project management, business/management, construction management, or construction technology and 12 years of related project management experience, inclusive of 3 years of formal leadership experience. Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is required or must be obtained within one-year of entry into the position; OR
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 14 years of related project management experience, inclusive of 3 years of formal leadership experience. Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is required or must be obtained within one year of entry into the position.
  • Continued employment in this role is contingent upon obtaining the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. Failure to obtain the certification within the required timeframe will result in removal from the role and may lead to reassignment, demotion, or separation from employment.

Other Qualifications

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management or Business and formal leadership experience.
  • Experience presenting to executive audiences, leading people or cross-functional teams, and distilling large amounts of information into key messages and business insights

  • Motivates through 'leading by example,' coaching/mentoring and providing ongoing constructive feedback to subordinate staff; competent in systematically eliciting the best efforts and results from subordinate staff.
  • Deals effectively with resistance; takes positive steps to avoid the recurrence of errors through constructive critique.
  • Ability to work in a 'team' and/or 'matrixed' structure, supporting multiple clients.
  • Ability to conduct efficacious meetings and manage the meeting process with optimal results.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work with shifting priorities; embrace new/evolving responsibilities.
  • Initiates new ideas and approaches; challenges prevailing practices and approaches with reasonably sound alternatives.
