Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer II - Sustaining will play a critical role in the development and support of leading-edge, industry-defining solar tracker components and more. Mechanical Engineer II - Sustaining will be given design ownership of components and sub-systems helping to drive to lower cost, increased reliability, and increased application. Working with multiple levels of management, engineering, and other departments, you will create and select state-of-the-art technologies and products. You will utilize tools such as computer aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA), and failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA). This position may require occasional evening and weekend hours. Some travel is required. You will:

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Take design responsibility for assigned components and sub-systems.
  • Support alternate design exploration for cost reduction, quality improvement, or additional supply purposes.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) efforts on components and sub-systems.
  • Provide clear direction to cross-functional teams with uncompromising drive to meet program targets.
  • Engage departments across the organization to resolve resource conflicts, remove roadblocks, & implement risk mitigation.
  • Manage the process of scope definition and change control, including estimating and negotiations of program scope variations.
  • Report status of assigned programs at various levels of the organization.
  • Create Design Requirements Documents (DRD) based on Market Requirements Documents (MRD) created by Product Management.
  • Create plans for component and system tests and interpret results to demonstrate designs meet requirements.
  • Read and process engineering documents, including process design guidelines, manufacturing drawings, and engineering best practices guides.
  • Create design concepts using SolidWorks and analyze them for suitability using FEA, Tolerance analysis, FMEA, DFMA, etc. as appropriate.
  • Generate design history and design record documents in compliance with company requirements.
  • Work with Mechanical Designers to create detail CAD models and drawings.
  • Develop timelines and cost estimates for development tasks and appraise management of performance to plan.
  • Work with the Quality dept. to develop inspection and test plans for supplier qualification of components and sub-assemblies.
  • Assess reliability, safety, performance, and risk of designs & methodologies; coordinate and communicate development schedules and compatibility or design issues throughout the team continuously.
  • Oversee testing and theoretical analysis of products to determine product safety and efficacy.
  • Drive designs from concept through to production and on to full installed field support: developing all documentation to support internal and external customers.
  • Travel to project sites, suppliers, labs, etc., as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience developing mechanical components and systems for new products.
  • 2+ years of experience performing mechanical engineering hand-calculations
  • 2+ years design experience designing structural components and hardware, gearing and/or drivetrains.
  • 2+ years of experience utilizing FEA, DFMA and design for cost in the development of products.
  • 1+ years of experience defining design validation tests
  • 1+ years working in an environment with Stage Gate Product Development Processes
  • 2+ years of experience using SolidWorks
  • 4+ years of experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to travel in the USA and to locations around the world

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Hands on experience with product installation and field trouble shooting
  • Development and performance of Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Ability to effectively work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent communication and team building skills
  • Organizational and time-management skills
  • Experience in the solar industry
  • Experience in designing for corrosion control of parts
  • Experience in varied manufacturing process capabilities to include aluminum extrusion, roll forming, sheet metal stamping, injection molding, casting
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, smaller company environment
