An increasing number of countries and regions across the world have decided to become climate neutral by 2050 at the latest. This implies not only that energy systems need to become fully clean within the next 30 years, but also the industrial sector must reach climate neutrality within just one generation. While this is creating tremendous opportunities for investments and clean development, immense efforts are needed to reach net-zero climate objectives, especially for energy-intensive industries.

As an energy intensive industry, the global steel sector accounts for around 9% of global emissions, making it among the most challenging sectors to decarbonise. Meeting a projected 2050 steel demand while reaching net zero requires a rapid, large-scale adoption of low carbon technologies in the sector. The process of building a climate neutral steel sector by 2050 has already started, however, the speed of deployment is not yet where it needs to be.

And this is where we get involved. As a think tank, Agora is pursuing the goal of achieving a climate-neutral energy system worldwide by the middle of the century. With around 190 employees at four locations worldwide, we combine research, dialogue and public relations in our daily work to find answers to those questions that are crucial to the energy transition. In doing so, we work closely with partners in numerous countries. And - very importantly - we act independently and free of economic or party-political interests.

Since 2021, Agora Industry's global steel transformation programme has developed a series of analyses aimed at clearly directing policymakers, industry and civil society towards the technologies that will have the greatest impact on reducing emissions in the steel sector. Through our evidence-based analysis, stakeholder dialogues, policy proposals and development of key tools such as the Global Steel Transformation Tracker, Agora Industry has positioned itself as a reference for information and advice on the transformation of the global steel sector. We have also developed strategic communications around green iron trade over the last few years. Our team is expert and strategic.

This position is part of Agora Industry's International Collaboration and Markets team, working closely with a wider group of industry experts in various regions. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a Project Manager Global Steel Transformation (f/m/d)

Full- or part-time (min. 32 hours)- based in Berlin

Your responsibilities include

• Conducting and managing specific research projects on the transformation of the steel sector;
• Develop studies, memos, and policy papers on different aspects to promote the fast transformation of the global steel sector;
• In coordination with regional teams, systematically transfer international best practices, expertise, and research results from Agora's work in steel transformation to stakeholders in various focus regions;
• Working with Agora's closest partners in the field; strongly engaging with stakeholders, and advising government authorities on key policies;
• Contribute to the collection and management of data for updating various Agora tools, such as the Global Steel Transformation Tracker;
• Monitoring political debates and technological developments;
• Support the development and implementation of steel decarbonisation roadmaps in targeted countries;
• Communicating results and insights from Agora's work, as well as knowledge about industry transition policies, regulations and techno-economic developments to various audiences;
• Support stakeholder engagement and network development, including organisation of consultations, events and workshops;
• Working with Agora's team to ensure the smooth running of daily work and forward planning, including with team members working from Berlin, Brussels and Beijing.

We are looking for

• A strong desire to actively shape the global clean energy and industry transitions;
• A Master's degree in economics, engineering or similar and at least 3 years of relevant work experience with industry topics. Specific experience working with the steel sector is an asset;
• Experience working on public policy matters and communicating with policymakers;
• A proven track record and field of expertise working in or with industry stakeholders, for example on technologies/innovation, economics or materials science;
• Experience with working in international teams and networks;
• Dedication, reliability, perseverance, and a strong intellect; creativity and an ability to work independently as well as in a team;
• High degree of personal initiative as well as a structured and organised working manner;
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, ability to present analytical and research material;
• Willingness to travel internationally;
• Fluency in English; other language skills are a plus.
