Location & Team Gatherings
We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of the listed location above.
We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.
About this role
As a BESS Operations Engineer on Intersect's Operations team, you'll own the technical performance, safety, and reliability of our utility-scale battery energy storage fleet. You'll analyze operational data, lead root cause analyses on equipment faults, and partner directly with field teams and OEMs to resolve complex technical issues and minimize downtime.
Beyond day-to-day troubleshooting, you'll shape the long-term health of our storage portfolio by tracking critical metrics such as availability, capacity, State of Charge (SOC), and cycling and partnering with engineers to uncover fleet-wide upgrades. By documenting lessons learned and leading technical reviews of design drawings, calculations, and site procedures, you'll ensure our operational insights continuously elevate how Intersect builds and runs clean energy infrastructure.
Team overview
This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect's mission to accelerate the clean energy transition. The Operations team safeguards the safety, reliability, and commercial performance of our utility-scale power assets over their full lifecycle. Joining this team means working alongside field specialists, analysts, and engineers to solve real-world grid and equipment challenges while building the operational feedback loops that make our fleet safer and higher-performing every year.
What you'll do
Lead BESS Troubleshooting, Reliability, and Root Cause Analysis
- Review equipment faults, failures, operational history, and telemetry data to rapidly resolve site issues while mitigating downtime and safety risks.
- Perform rigorous Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on component and system failures, recommending and implementing corrective actions to improve fleet reliability.
- Travel to operating sites to assess physical equipment conditions, support field operations independently in troubleshooting, and provide actionable technical feedback.
Optimize Fleet Performance Data and Analytics
- Coordinate and validate BESS data collection to accurately track and report availability, capacity, State of Charge (SOC), cycling, and key operational metrics.
- Collaborate with performance engineers to evaluate portfolio-wide performance trends, identify hardware/software upgrades, and improve both asset safety and energy output.
Manage OEM Technical Relationships and Warranties
- Track BESS warranties with asset managers across the fleet, navigating architectural and contractual differences across OEMs to protect asset value and enforce performance guarantees.
- Engage external vendors and OEMs to resolve deep technical issues and apply emerging industry innovations to our operating portfolio.
Drive Engineering Standards and Continuous Improvement
- Lead the review of design drawings, engineering calculations, and operational procedures for both internal and external teams.
- Document operational lessons learned to drive continuous improvement across future project development, engineering, and construction.
What you'll bring
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is mandatory, a M.S.EE or PhD is preferred.
- 5+ years of engineering experience in utility-scale power generation or storage, with direct operational experience supporting utility-scale (>100 MW) BESS projects.
- Deep technical familiarity with BESS architectures (cells, modules, racks, BMS, PCS, TMS, EMS) and how differences across OEMs impact operations, safety, and warranties.
- Proven track record leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on complex electrical, thermal, or controls failures and translating findings into fleet-wide reliability improvements.
- Strong analytical capability in evaluating BESS telemetry and historian data; specifically availability, capacity retention, SOC calibration, cycling limits, and ramp rates.
- Experience reviewing electrical/mechanical design drawings, calculations, and site interconnection requirements.
- Ability to travel up to 25% to operating sites across Texas and other portfolio regions to assess equipment and partner with field teams.
- A grounded, safety-first mindset aligned with Intersect's core values of Equity, Humility, Authenticity, Long-run Value, and People Come First.
