What They Do

SELCO Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and deploying decentralized renewable energy solutions, primarily focusing on solar technologies. Founded by Harish Hande, who also co-founded SELCO India, the Foundation aims to alleviate poverty and enhance access to essential services such as healthcare and education in underserved rural communities across India (source: energypedia.info). The Foundation operates mainly in South Asia, particularly in states like Karnataka, Odisha, and Jharkhand, utilizing a network of energy service centers established by SELCO India (source: selcofoundation.org). Their approach emphasizes user-centered solutions, including solar-powered lighting, thermal water heaters, and energy-efficient medical equipment, which are designed to reduce labor and enable income generation for low-income rural users (source: lemelson.org).

Projects & Track Record

SELCO Foundation has undertaken several notable projects aimed at enhancing energy access and improving livelihoods. One significant initiative is the e-Shala (e-school) project, which deploys solar-powered storage devices and LED projectors to electrify education in rural areas, particularly in Karnataka (source: wikipedia.org). Additionally, the Foundation has supported agricultural mechanization projects, such as Jayashree's bread-making unit, which utilizes SELCO-supported machinery to reduce labor on farms (source: lemelson.org). The Foundation's current major projects include the 'Energy for Health' initiative, which aims to provide solar solutions to 25,000 healthcare facilities by 2026, and the Sustainable Energy Led Climate Action Program (SELCAP) focusing on energy planning in Odisha and Jharkhand (source: hbs.edu).

Recent Developments

In recent years, SELCO Foundation has expanded its partnerships and initiatives significantly. The 'Energy for Health' partnership with IKEA Foundation has been announced to target solar solutions for 25,000 healthcare facilities by 2026, building on previous successful projects (source: hbs.edu). The Foundation also received a $400,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation in 2022 to integrate decentralized renewable energy into programs in Odisha and Jharkhand, following a $200,000 grant in 2020 for healthcare initiatives (source: macfound.org). While no acquisitions or mergers have been reported, the Foundation continues to receive funding from various sources, including a notable $2 million grant from DOEN Foundation in 2016 (source: doughnuteconomics.org).

Working There

SELCO Foundation operates within a broader ecosystem that includes SELCO India and other entities, employing around 600 people across various roles. Positions range from design thinking and technology development to program implementation in health, education, and livelihoods (source: frappe.io). The Foundation primarily hires from its headquarters in Bangalore and branches across several Indian states, emphasizing local recruitment to build trust in rural service roles (source: selco-india.com). The company culture is centered around long-term mission protection, inclusive hiring practices, and collaboration within the ecosystem, focusing on user-centered innovation and community ownership models (source: doughnuteconomics.org).

Job Description

SELCO Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that drives the use of decentralized renewable energy (DRE) to improve livelihoods, health, and education outcomes in under-served communities across India. Through innovation, ecosystem building, and research, the Foundation demonstrates how sustainable energy can be a catalyst for inclusive development and climate resilience.

SELCO Foundation is developing a centralized Control Room to monitor and analyze Remote Monitoring System (RMS) data from solar-powered livelihood installations across India. The project engineer will play a key role in investigating technical issues identified through the RMS dashboards by engaging with vendors and field teams to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely resolution. The role involves both remote analytical work and on-ground validation, supporting system reliability and performance improvement across multiple geographies. Your insights will shape system design, BOM selection to improve reliability, and contribute to knowledge generation across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and interpret RMS dashboard data to identify performance deviations and technical faults in solar systems.
  • Support various program teams in analysing performance trends and improving system reliability.
  • Conduct data-driven diagnosis of issues and arrive at clear technical conclusions on root cause and resolution.
  • Engage directly with vendor technicians, inverter/RMS manufacturers, and field engineers to validate root cause and resolve issues.
  • Weekly document technical findings-capturing the issue, analysis, and corrective action taken and support teams in developing reports and case studies based on technical findings.
  • Support the Control Room team in analysing performance trends and improving system reliability.
  • Recommend design, material and operational improvements based on recurring patterns observed from the field installations.
  • Improve existing system reliability and performance by revising the design and Bill of Materials (BoM) against real field conditions and failure history.

Field Visit

Regular field visits to sites for root cause analysis. Provide training to geography teams on issue resolution, rectification and maintenance for capacity building. Visits to vendor organisation for technical discussions, issue resolution, etc.

Education

  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Electronics, Renewable Energy, or related technical field.
  • Additional training or certification in solar system design, installation, or O&M will be an advantage.

Experience

  • 1-4 years of on-ground experience in solar PV systems, particularly in installation, commissioning, operations, or maintenance.
  • Proven ability to interpret and troubleshoot electrical or performance issues in solar systems.
  • Experience working with inverter manufacturers, system integrators, or technical service vendors will be preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate field-level technical insights into reports or case studies.
  • Prior exposure to RMS or IoT-based monitoring platforms used for solar applications is desirable.

Soft Skill

  • Effective communicator capable of engaging with vendor technicians, OEM support teams, and field engineers.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation ability - for case studies, issue logs, and learning briefs.
