Scale Microgrids
Company Overview
Scale Microgrids
Ridgewood, NJ, United States
2016
Approximately 100 employees (source: builtinnyc.com).
What They Do
Scale Microgrids specializes in distributed energy systems, particularly microgrids that integrate fuel cells, solar, and storage to deliver cheaper, cleaner, and more resilient power independent of the utility grid (source: cbinsights.com). The company has evolved from a developer of on-site energy systems into a vertically integrated distributed energy firm that designs, builds, finances, and operates microgrids, focusing on resilience and cost savings for commercial and industrial customers (source: scalemicrogrids.com). Its core products and services encompass designing, constructing, financing, and operating on-site energy solutions such as combined heat and power (CHP) fuel cell systems paired with thermal loops, community solar projects, and custom microgrids for energy consumers ranging from grocery stores to industrial facilities (source: scalemicrogrids.com). Target markets include commercial real estate, manufacturing, retail like grocery chains, and institutions seeking demand response programs and energy efficiency (source: scalemicrogrids.com).
Projects & Track Record
A notable completed project includes the acquisition and development of a 9.6-megawatt CHP fuel cell system in Bridgeport, Connecticut, paired with a thermal loop, acquired pre-construction from NuPower in Easton, Connecticut, with financing from Investec, MUFG debt, and Foss & Co tax equity (source: cbinsights.com). Scale also acquired over 100 megawatts of community solar projects, enhancing its solar portfolio, though specific names and completion years are not detailed beyond the acquisition announcement (source: scalemicrogrids.com). Ongoing efforts center on delivering reliable electricity and clean heat from HyAxiom fuel cells at the Bridgeport site, announced in March 2025 (source: cbinsights.com). Key partnerships involve developers like NuPower, investors such as Gutami, financiers Investec, MUFG, Foss & Co, and equity backer Warburg Pincus (source: cbinsights.com).
Recent Developments
In the last two years through early 2026, Scale Microgrids secured debt financing for the 9.6 MW Bridgeport, Connecticut CHP fuel cell project on March 18, 2025, marking a major contract win for reliable electricity and clean heat delivery (source: cbinsights.com). The company announced an equity commitment of up to $300 million from Warburg Pincus to fuel growth in distributed energy (source: scalemicrogrids.com). It also acquired over 100 MW of community solar projects from Gutami, enhancing its solar portfolio (source: scalemicrogrids.com).
Working There
Scale Microgrids offers hybrid roles across departments like engineering, finance, project development, operations, and sales, with recent job postings available in at least two hybrid locations tied to its New York and other regional offices (source: builtinnyc.com). Hiring occurs from physical offices including the Ridgewood, New Jersey headquarters and regional sites in New York, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, where employees work onsite with no specified typical time requirement (source: scalemicrogrids.com). Company culture emphasizes close collaboration with energy experts to meet customer goals in cost, resilience, and sustainability, positioning microgrids as critical for humanity's energy future (source: scalemicrogrids.com).

We are looking for a Development Engineer to provide comprehensive engineering support for our distributed energy and microgrid projects. Our projects typically include managing a variety of DER and microgrid assets - such as solar, energy storage, controls, and reciprocating engines.
This role will report to our Manager of Development Engineering and will be a hybrid role based out of our Oakland, CA, or Santa Monica, CA offices.
Key responsibilities will include
- Create electrical and physical designs for microgrid and DER systems, accounting for existing electrical infrastructure, AHJ requirements, and other site constraints
- Utilize your strong technical and communication skills to identify and communicate technical constraints and possibilities to other internal and customer stakeholders.
- Work extensively with our Business Development (BD) teams to evaluate and develop the right technical solutions.
- Work with the BD, execution, and commercial teams on specific projects to ensure the Microgrid integration is technically sound, practical, and cost-effective. This includes working with existing service entrance one-line drawings or creating new ones to provide the best design interface for functionality and cost
- Investigate the interconnection, which includes submitting interconnection applications and completing modifications to existing design concepts that are applicable to each site
- Work with switchgear manufacturers (and other OEMs) like Schneider Electric to ensure switchgear designs meet project requirements, including site constraints and utility requirements, within cost and schedule constraints. This includes working at voltage levels of 34.5kV, 23kV, 13.8kV, 4160V, 480V, and 208V, depending on site and system size
- Provide significant input to the solar, battery, and generator designs to optimize performance, reliability, and sustainability for each customer site
- Collaborate with the rest of the development engineering team, as well as other internal stakeholders, to continually improve templates and processes and enable continuous improvement
The Ideal Candidate
- 5+ years of experience in the design and construction of power/generation/renewable energy projects
- Thorough technical understanding of distributed energy technologies, including some combination of solar, battery, and reciprocating engines/turbines
- Deep understanding of rotating power with reciprocating engines in the 200 to 2000kw size range per engine is preferred.
- Understanding of onsite power generation, including parallel operation with the utility bus as well as with other DERs, both in grid parallel mode and island mode operations.
- Solid understanding of the utility side of the interconnection
- Knowledge of the various DER power sources within the Microgrid and how they best interface with the utility to provide a more efficient system
- Knowledge of emissions from the utility side as well as each of the DERs.
- Knowledge of systems controls for the DERs and how they can be utilized to accomplish specific operating goals while part of the Microgrid. These goals provide economic return to us and the customer
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical people to make projects work
- A BS in Engineering is required; a BS in Electrical Engineering with a focus on the power side is preferred
- PE in power or progressing towards that license is preferred
- Advanced courses in power or a higher-level degree in the field are preferred
This is a great opportunity to have a long-term impact on a fast-paced, private equity-backed growth business. Some of the core virtues embraced by Scales' employees include:
- Do the Right Thing
- Act Like an Owner
