Job Description

The Environmental Specialist I will work under the guidance of the Safety Manager to ensure environmental compliance throughout both pre-construction and construction phases of various projects. In this role, you will support the Safety Manager and Senior Safety Manager in developing and implementing policies and programs, while collaborating with Field Engineers to maintain compliance.

The primary focus of this position is to assist with design, permitting, estimating, procurement and planning during the pre-construction phase, while also ensuring adherence to environmental regulations during construction and project closeout. Key responsibilities include implementing the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC), and other permitting requirements related to biological and cultural resources.

This role demands strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including business development teams, client representatives, Engineers of record, as well as teams in design, estimating, procurement, and construction.

Primary Job Responsibilities

The Environmental Specialist will support the environmental aspects of multiple solar, battery energy storage system projects, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations during the pre-construction and construction phases. The primary focus of this role includes environmental compliance, conducting due diligence, and identifying and addressing buildable area constraints.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Review environmental due diligence documentation and collaborate with engineers to identify and address environmental constraints.
  • Provide estimating and engineering teams with essential environmental data related to buildable areas, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Participate in civil construction plan reviews (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC) by reviewing design plans and providing construction feedback.
  • Review and redline construction plans and environmental compliance plans provided by the Engineer of Record to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and permitting requirements.
  • Develop training for each project prior to mobilization.
  • Assist the permitting team in meeting federal, state, and local environmental regulations and permitting requirements including fuel, air, waste and recycling.
  • Provide environmental guidance and support to project site teams both prior to mobilization and throughout the construction phase by conducting site audits, assisting in implementing corrective actions, and collaborating with project owner and/or regulator regarding compliance efforts.
  • Strengthen client relationships and enhance the company's reputation through proactive environmental initiatives.
  • Support continuous improvement and maintain quality control in environmental compliance and excellence within the organization.
  • Participate in meetings and correspondence with clients and the Engineer of Record to provide environmental support.
  • Undertake additional tasks and training as assigned by the Safety Manager or Engineering Manager.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in environmental roles.
  • Prior experience or certifications in stormwater management, such as CESSWI, QSP or the ability to obtain them.
  • Training in environmental regulations and programs, including National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Water of the United States (WOTUS), Clean Water Act (CWA), and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
  • Valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle driving record (MVR).

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to present information effectively to small groups of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening, and presentation) to collaborate effectively with employees, subcontractors and clients.
  • Proficient computer skills, with the ability to quickly learn and efficiently use relevant software, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with Computer Aided Design (CAD) or the ability to quickly acquire the necessary skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to schedule, plan, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Intermediate knowledge of construction drawings, including layout, references, notes, details and best practices for producing and interpreting drawings.
  • Commitment to following safety protocols and understanding the intent behind safety rules, ensuring adherence without compromising safety standards.
