What They Do

TERI is a not-for-profit research institute that focuses on policy research, advisory services, and capacity building in the fields of energy, environment, and sustainability. Unlike commercial renewable energy companies, TERI does not deploy projects like solar farms or wind turbines; instead, it operates as a think tank that emphasizes research, analysis, and consulting. This distinction is crucial for job seekers, as roles at TERI are centered around intellectual contributions rather than engineering or operational tasks in energy deployment (source: teriin.org, wikipedia.org).

TERI's core focus areas include renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, and sustainable agriculture, among others. The institute develops policies, tools, and innovations through rigorous research rather than manufacturing or selling hardware. Its products and services encompass evidence-based policy research, project implementation, and capacity building, which are vital for various stakeholders including governments, businesses, and civil society (source: teriin.org, cbinsights.com).

Target markets for TERI's services include national and sub-national governments, multilateral institutions, and sectors such as urban development and sustainable agriculture. The institute emphasizes collaboration with various stakeholders to influence global climate policy and promote sustainable practices (source: teriin.org, slocat.net). As India's leading independent think tank, TERI leverages its multidisciplinary teams and global presence to bridge research with actionable interventions, fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability (source: teriin.org, devex.com).

Projects & Track Record

TERI has a rich history of notable projects, including the development and administration of GRIHA, India's national green building rating system, which has guided sustainable construction practices across the country. Additionally, the establishment of the world's largest Mycorrhiza production facility in Gurugram in 2016-17 showcases TERI's commitment to advancing biotechnology applications. The institute also founded TERI University in 1998, which has since gained recognition for its PhD and Master's programs in sustainability (source: teriin.org, wikipedia.org, testbook.com).

Recent Developments

In recent news, on January 25, 2025, TERI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to establish the Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition at its Institute of Energy Transition in Hyderabad. This initiative aims to enhance research in green buildings, transport, and power efficiency, with financial support from BEE and infrastructure provided by TERI (source: cbinsights.com). Furthermore, the 21st World Sustainable Development Summit was announced for February 16-18, 2022, highlighting TERI's ongoing commitment to sustainability and global dialogue (source: testbook.com).

Working There

Working at TERI offers a diverse range of roles, including research professionals in energy and environment, policy analysts, and specialists in social sciences and biotechnology. The institute's departments cover various fields such as industrial energy efficiency, sustainable habitat, and climate change, providing ample opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration. Hiring occurs across multiple locations, including New Delhi, Gurugram, and Hyderabad, indicating a robust recruitment strategy for experts in various domains (source: teriin.org, devex.com).
