Job Description

Ulteig is seeking talented and motivated candidates for a Lead Civil Owner's Engineer - Renewables to serve as a trusted third‑party engineer for our renewable energy owner‑clients across solar, wind, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects. You will act as a technical leader, planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating detailed, multi‑discipline design reviews across all phases-from early development through IFC release, construction, and commissioning-focused on civil and structural scope.

What You'll Do

  • Operate as the Owner's independent reviewer of EOR designs for civil and structural packages (grading/earthwork, drainage/stormwater, access roads/crane paths, foundations, equipment pads, buildings, and site civil details). Provide clear, actionable comments and risk‑based recommendations that protect owner objectives for safety, cost, schedule, quality, and performance.
  • Lead formal design reviews at 30/60/90/IFC stages; manage comment logs; drive closure with EORs and EPCs; track critical design decisions and deviations from standards or permits.
  • Verify civil and structural basis of design, including topography, survey control, geotechnical parameters, hydrology/hydraulics, ensuring conformance with project requirements, AHJ codes (e.g., IBC, ASCE 7), environmental constraints, and owner standards.
  • Assess constructability and construction risk: haul routes, laydown areas, cut/fill balancing, temporary works, erosion and sediment controls, dewatering, and traffic management; recommend value‑engineering options to reduce risk and total installed cost.
  • Review stormwater and drainage design and perform necessary calculations to confirm hydraulic capacity, erosion protection, and permit compliance.
  • Evaluate structural designs (e.g., tracker piles, inverter/transformer pads, O&M buildings, substation foundations) for design loads, settlement, corrosion, frost, uplift, and constructability; flag geotechnical gaps and testing requirements.
  • Check plans and specs for completeness, consistency, and code compliance; confirm drawing coordination across civil, structural, electrical, and SCADA interfaces; ensure ownership of key interfaces (e.g., cable trench, equipment clearances, grounding impacts).
  • Provide owner‑side technical leadership during RFI/field changes, NCRs, and change orders; advise on impacts to quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Support permitting (stormwater, grading, roadway, encroachment, SPCC) and coordinate with environmental specialists to align design with conditions of approval.
  • Mentor and guide reviewers and junior engineers; foster a collaborative, solutions‑oriented culture with EORs, EPCs, and construction partners.
  • Partner with clients to define review scope, standards, and success criteria; support business development with technical scoping and proposal inputs.

What We Expect from You

  • B.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (or equivalent). Civil PE required; NCEES Council Record preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10+ years of civil and/or structural engineering experience with utility‑scale renewables design or design review, is required. Experience as Owner's Engineer or Independent Engineer is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of codes and standards relevant to civil and structural design (e.g., IBC, ASCE 7, ACI/AISC), construction practices, and permitting.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills; proven ability to lead multi‑discipline reviews and drive decisions.
  • Strong report writing and documentation skills; experience preparing review memos, comment matrices, and owner recommendations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and EOR/EPC
  • Must have permanent work authorization for the US
