Job Description
Vestas Australia is offering an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Power Systems Engineers. The Australian Grid presents a challenging yet fascinating field to work in. With Vestas Australia's significant expansion, your expertise and experience will contribute to building a sustainable future.
The Vestas APAC Power Systems Performance Analysis team is dedicated to coordinating, managing, and conducting in-depth power systems analysis related to the grid connection aspects of wind power plant projects. This analysis spans the complete lifecycle of these projects, including sales, construction, and service phases. By leveraging Vestas' products, the team assesses plant performance against respective grid code requirements, ensuring optimal functionality and compliance.
In addition to their core responsibilities, the team collaborates closely with other global and regional cross-functional teams within Vestas. These teams include Electrical Simulation Models, Converter Control, EBoP, SCADA, Technical Grid Management, and Grid Execution. Through this collaboration, the Power Systems Performance Analysis team delivers competitive and compliant solutions, driving innovation and excellence in renewable energy.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate a small group of power systems engineers on multiple projects undertaking power system studies to define the wind farm generator performance standards
- Support Head of Power Systems Performance Analysis in, resource management, resolving technical queries escalated by all team members, addressing customer queries, coordinating with internal stakeholders
- Take the lead in development of the wind farm control system functional design specification and reactive power plant requirements
- Lead and undertake modeling and simulation of Wind and Hybrid Power Plants including PV and Battery Energy Storage
- Lead, review and assess the performance, efficiency, and reliability of balance of plant systems specific to renewable energy projects
- Identifying and resolving issues and inefficiencies within the balance of plant systems. This involves diagnosing problems, conducting root cause analysis, reviewing document, and coordinating with other teams
- Review of Balance of Plant (BoP) design, drawing and document submissions from subcontractors against industry best practice, law, international and local standards, in addition to Vestas' contractual and interfacing requirements from grid connection perspective
- Lead and manage the grid connection deliverables required to be submitted by Vestas ensuring these are delivered in a timely, safe and high-quality manner.
- Prepare project specific work/ delivery plans, schedules within PSPA scope and coordinate and hold project progress meetings with PSPA project team
- Attend network service provider/ independent system operator (or equivalent bodies within APAC region) to present power system study results and discuss issues
- Take a lead on liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure grid connection issues are resolved promptly
- Engage and manage external consultants when required
- Coordinate, lead investigations with other team members in relation to inquiries regarding wind farm technical performance and prepare formal responses
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations to customer.
- Attend and provide input to various safety, design, technical and risk meetings, workshops and reviews
- Pioneer and lead process improvement initiatives
- Gain and master Vestas product specific knowledge and mentor less experienced engineer on these aspects
- Pioneer and maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and document all grid connection activities, milestones, and outcomes
Qualifications
- Bachelors' / Masters' degree specializing in power systems with a minimum of 10+yrs industry experience, or
- PhD in power systems or power electronics with a minimum of 6+yrs industry experience
Competencies
- Expert user of PSCAD, PSS/E and DIgSILENT PowerFactory
- Basic level of experience in small signal analysis tools such as SSAT is advantageous
- Expert level developer and user of Python automation scripts for Power Systems analysis tools above
- Proven experience in mentoring and developing less experienced team members
- Able to understand and interpret complex grid code requirements
- Proven track record in the power systems modelling and analysis along with expert level knowledge in any one of the areas of hybrid plant analysis, weak grid analysis, system strength impact assessment
- Product knowledge of STATCOMs/ synchronous condensers/ SVCs /HVDC system design and control/ BESS systems (with Grid Forming technology) is advantageous
- Analytical mindset with the ability to identify and solve problems
- Attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines
- Experience in wind and or other renewable industries is preferred
