What They Do
Vattenfall is a leading European energy company focused on renewable energy production and distribution. The company has a rich history that began with hydroelectric power and has evolved to include a diverse portfolio of energy sources, including offshore and onshore wind, nuclear power, and heat networks. Vattenfall operates approximately 139,000 km of power lines in Sweden, serving around 900,000 customers, and is recognized as the second largest energy company in Sweden and the largest offshore wind operator in Denmark (source: group.vattenfall.com). Their commitment to fossil-free electricity and heat production is evident in their ongoing projects and strategic focus on transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Projects & Track Record
Vattenfall has a notable track record of significant projects, including the historic Olidan hydroelectric plant in Trollhättan, which was Sweden's largest by the early 1900s, and the Porjus Power Plant, operational since 1915. In recent years, they have expanded their offshore wind capabilities with projects like Horns Rev 1 and 3 in Denmark, and the Vesterhav North and South farms, which opened in autumn 2024. Additionally, Vattenfall has developed nine hydro power plants in Finland and has been involved in 13 wind and battery storage projects in the UK since 2008, showcasing their commitment to renewable energy across multiple regions (source: history.vattenfall.com). Their ongoing projects include the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in Denmark and the Korsnäs offshore wind farm in Finland, which supports carbon neutrality goals by 2035.
Recent Developments
In the past two years, Vattenfall has celebrated its 115th anniversary, emphasizing its commitment to fossil-free energy and announcing plans to phase out coal by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 under the leadership of CEO Anna Borg. The company has also successfully opened the Vesterhav North and South offshore wind farms in Denmark in autumn 2024, marking a significant milestone in their renewable energy initiatives (source: group.vattenfall.com). While no specific new contracts or acquisitions were reported for 2023-2024, Vattenfall continues to focus on its operational milestones and ongoing developments in offshore wind energy.
Working There
Vattenfall offers a variety of roles across its operations, including energy production in hydro, wind, and nuclear sectors, as well as grid operations and retail services. The company employs approximately 500 staff in Denmark and the UK, focusing on offshore wind and heat networks, and has active hiring in locations such as Solna (Sweden HQ), Kolding (Denmark HQ), and various cities in the UK and Finland (source: group.vattenfall.com). The company culture is characterized by long-term state ownership, fostering stability and collaboration, particularly through historic Nordic power coordination efforts that date back to its founding in 1909. This culture supports Vattenfall's adaptation to energy transitions and its commitment to promoting fossil-free energy solutions.
