EnergyHub

Company Overview

EnergyHub, an independent subsidiary of Alarm.com

Brooklyn, New York, United States

2007

Approximately 200 employees (source: rocketreach.co). Revenue of $19.1 million in FY 2024 (source: rocketreach.co).

What They Do

EnergyHub specializes in software technology focused on energy management, evolving from its initial development of demand response and energy efficiency solutions to enabling virtual power plants. This is achieved by integrating consumer devices such as smart thermostats, electric vehicles, EV chargers, energy storage systems, solar inverters, and water heaters with utility grids. This integration enhances reliability and supports higher penetration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind (source: rocketreach.co). The company’s primary products include a platform that aggregates Internet of Things devices into virtual power plants, allowing real-time energy use control and peak load management, which benefits over one million consumers (source: rocketreach.co). EnergyHub's services also encompass energy management systems that connect homeowners with utilities, facilitating actionable consumption reductions and grid optimization (source: cbinsights.com). The company primarily targets utilities across the United States, having grown its clientele to about 80 utilities since its inception, serving regions including Arizona, California, Oregon, the Midwest, Florida, and New England (source: cbinsights.com). Competitors include AutoGrid, BuildingIQ, and Enel X, with EnergyHub differentiating itself through its integration capabilities and a focus on patent activity in demand response (source: rocketreach.co).

Projects & Track Record

While specific completed projects are not detailed by name or capacity, EnergyHub supports large-scale utility programs, particularly those managed for utilities in the Phoenix area, which are among the largest in its portfolio (source: cbinsights.com). The company has established partnerships with approximately 80 U.S. utilities, collaborating with Alarm.com for connected home solutions (source: cbinsights.com). Its geographic presence is primarily U.S.-based, concentrated in states like Arizona, California, Oregon, Florida, and New England, with no noted international expansion (source: cbinsights.com).

Recent Developments

In the last two years, EnergyHub was highlighted in a CB Insights research brief on October 13, 2023, which emphasized its management of large utility programs, particularly in the Phoenix area (source: cbinsights.com). However, there have been no major announcements, contracts won, acquisitions, mergers, or funding rounds reported since its acquisition by Alarm.com in 2013, which totaled between $17.7 million and $33.1 million across earlier funding rounds (source: cbinsights.com). Additionally, no awards, certifications, or milestones from 2024-2025 have been documented in the available sources.

Working There

EnergyHub offers a variety of roles primarily in software development, energy management, and demand response, with support functions also available. The leadership team includes Co-Founder and Managing Director László Koncz, and the company operates under various NAICS and SIC codes related to professional services (source: rocketreach.co). Hiring occurs at the Brooklyn headquarters, where the company emphasizes partnerships with leading Internet of Things firms and scalability with utilities, although specific employee reviews or internal culture descriptions are limited (source: rocketreach.co). No specific benefits have been documented in the available data.

Job Description

We are seeking a Software Architect who fundamentally understands that software architecture is an economic and business tool, not just an academic exercise. We do not want an "Ivory Tower" architect who dictates policy from afar. Instead, we need a hands-on, pragmatic leader who operates as a "civil servant" to our execution teams, embedding with them to understand their daily friction and validating strategies through shared struggle. You will act as the technical North Star for the organization, driving major technical transitions, shaping our organizational design, and scaling the technical baseline of our entire engineering department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pragmatic Architectural Modernization: Lead the strategic extraction of our move into a distributed architecture using Domain-Driven Design and other patterns as you see fit. You will ensure we avoid premature over-engineering, balancing technical purity with immediate business ROI and speed to market.
  • Sociotechnical & Organizational Design: Apply Conway's Law and actively utilize the "Inverse Conway Maneuver" to ensure our organizational chart and team communication pathways naturally produce loosely coupled, scalable software.
  • Platform Engineering Strategy: Guide the creation of our internal developer platform, ensuring it is treated as a tier-one product rather than a ticketing desk. You will define the "Thinnest Viable Platform" to radically reduce developer cognitive load while maintaining team autonomy.
  • Decentralized Leadership & Mentorship: Build scalable frameworks for knowledge transfer and asynchronous decision-making (such as RFCs and Architecture Decision Records) that elevate our engineers without creating bureaucratic bottlenecks. You will actively mentor Staff and Principal engineers, helping them navigate complex technical conflicts using data-driven discovery.
  • Executive Alignment: Act as the bilingual translation layer between the C-suite and the engineering floor. You will quantify technical debt, translate architectural constraints into financial and operational risks, and rigorously calculate the Total Cost of Ownership for critical "build vs. buy" decisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience: 15+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of operating at a Principal or Distinguished level within complex, scaling environments.
  • Technical Depth: Deep expertise in modern cloud architecture, distributed systems, data consistency patterns, and cloud economics (aka FinOps).
  • Leadership Without Authority: Demonstrated ability to drive organization-wide alignment, mediate ego-driven technical disputes, and influence multiple stream-aligned teams without relying on positional power.
  • Platform & Team Topologies Fluency: Deep understanding of modern team structures and platform engineering metrics (e.g., DORA and the SPACE framework) to concretely prove the ROI of technical investments.
  • Intellectual Humility: A leader who thrives in ambiguity, embraces rapid prototyping to de-risk unknown variables, and measures their personal success entirely by the autonomy and resilience of the teams they support.

Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.

Why work for EnergyHub?

  • Collaborate with outstanding people: Our employees work hard, do great work, and enjoy collaborating and learning from each other.
  • Make an immediate impact: New employees can expect to be given real responsibility for bringing new technologies to the marketplace. You are empowered to perform as soon as you join the team!
  • Gain well rounded experience: EnergyHub offers a diverse and dynamic environment where you will get the chance to work directly with executives and develop expertise across multiple areas of the business.
  • Work with the latest technologies: You'll gain exposure to a broad spectrum of IoT, SaaS and machine learning obstacles, including distributed fault-tolerance, device control optimization, and process modeling to support scalable interaction with disparate downstream APIs.
  • Be part of something important: Help create the future of how energy is produced and consumed. Make a positive impact on our climate.
