Job Description

At ORE Catapult, we are driving the future of offshore renewable energy. As the UK's leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave, and tidal energy, we develop cutting-edge solutions and deliver impactful research to support the energy transition.

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who will play a key role in developing mechanical systems, sub-systems and components that support the safe, effective and efficient operation of our test facilities. You will contribute to the full design life cycle from modelling and drawing creation to design validation, commissioning support, documentation and continual improvement. You will work under the guidance of our Mechanical Engineering Manager and collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, interns, suppliers and internal stakeholders.

Position

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be:

  • Creating and updating 3D CAD models, assemblies and layouts using Solid Edge
  • Producing engineering drawings to BS 8888 standards, applying GD&T appropriately
  • Managing models, drawings and BOMs through Teamcenter
  • Running design validation using ANSYS and supporting analytical tools (e.g., Excel, Mathcad, Matlab)
  • Supporting design reviews, actioning feedback and maintaining clear, accurate records
  • Preparing design justifications and technical reports
  • Contributing to installation, commissioning and troubleshooting activities
  • Supporting supplier interactions and internal technical discussions
  • Identifying improvements, capturing lessons learned and supporting audits
  • Upholding safety, quality and compliance standards in all work activities

Requirements

Essential Experience and Skills:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Early career experience in an engineering or design environment
  • Experience using 3D CAD modelling tools
  • Introductory experience with ANSYS or other FEA tools
  • Ability to produce and interpret engineering drawings
  • Awareness of relevant standards and engineering good practice
  • Strong communication skills and a proactive, safety-focused mindset
  • A structured, organised approach with excellent attention to detail

Desirable:

  • Previous placement or industry experience
  • Working knowledge of Solid Edge CAD software
  • Familiarity with Teamcenter or other PLM/document control systems
  • Understanding of GD&T principles
  • Exposure to renewable energy or testing environments
  • Progress toward professional registration
  • 1-2 years industry experience
