What They Do

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent, nonprofit public policy think tank and research institute dedicated to producing rigorous research that informs environmental policies aimed at achieving cleaner road, marine, and air transportation globally. Unlike renewable energy companies, ICCT focuses on enhancing environmental performance and energy efficiency across various transportation sectors, including light- and heavy-duty vehicles, marine shipping, and aviation. Their work involves technical analysis, modeling, and policy recommendations tailored for regulators, ensuring that their findings are accessible and actionable for policymakers worldwide (source: wikipedia.org).

Projects & Track Record

ICCT has been involved in several high-profile projects that have significantly impacted environmental regulations. Notably, their 2013-2014 Volkswagen emissions study, which was funded by ICCT and conducted by West Virginia University, revealed that U.S. diesel models emitted nitrogen oxides at levels 15-35 times above legal limits. This discovery prompted investigations by the EPA and CARB, leading to global scrutiny of automotive emissions practices (source: wikipedia.org). Additionally, ICCT's ongoing work encompasses various program areas, including electric vehicles and aviation, with substantial financial investments in research and analysis to support low-carbon pathways and regulatory compliance (source: theicct.org).

Recent Developments

In recent years, ICCT has reported steady financial growth, with revenue reaching $22.3 million in 2024, reflecting an increase from $16.4 million in 2021. The organization has also earned a Platinum Seal of Transparency for 2025 from Candid, alongside a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator, highlighting its commitment to finance, accountability, and leadership (source: theicct.org). While there have been no major acquisitions or funding rounds reported, ICCT's budget is projected to grow to $35.4 million by 2025, supported by existing funders (source: propublica.org).

Working There

ICCT offers a diverse range of roles spanning research areas such as vehicles, fuels, aviation, and modeling, as well as supporting functions like communications and operations. The organization has a strong governance structure, ensuring diverse recruitment and equitable compensation practices. While specific employee benefits are not detailed in public filings, the financials indicate a significant allocation towards salaries and wages, reflecting ICCT's commitment to its workforce (source: theicct.org). Recent job postings suggest active hiring across its various offices, including Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Berlin, Beijing, São Paulo, and New Delhi (source: zoominfo.com).
