What They Do

Cenex, the UK's Centre of Excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies, specializes in low emission transport and energy infrastructure. Established in 2005 as an independent, not-for-profit research technology organization (RTO) and consultancy, Cenex focuses on advancing technologies such as electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel cells, and optimized energy systems. Their services include project delivery for technology demonstrations, innovation support through R&D trials, and market development consulting, which are crucial for public sector organizations, private fleets, and global cities aiming for zero-carbon transitions (source: cenex.co.uk). The organization prides itself on its impartiality, providing evidence-based recommendations derived from in-house research rather than manufacturer data, thus positioning itself as a trusted advisor in the low-carbon sector (source: cenex.co.uk). Their target markets include local authorities, SMEs, and OEMs, all of whom benefit from Cenex's expertise in navigating the complexities of low-carbon technologies (source: leadiq.com).

Projects & Track Record

Cenex has a robust track record of delivering impactful projects in the low-carbon sector. Notably, they have monitored over 1,500 low carbon vehicles for various fleets and governments, and have installed more than 1,000 charge points in collaboration with local authorities and businesses. The organization has successfully deployed over £20 million in government funding across more than 20 research collaborations with universities and testing houses, showcasing their commitment to advancing low-carbon infrastructure (source: cenex.co.uk). Additionally, Cenex has conducted over 50 consultancy projects focused on low-carbon infrastructure, including gas, hydrogen refueling, and EV rollouts, further solidifying their role as a leader in the field (source: cenex.co.uk). Their ongoing efforts include leading research in Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies and wireless charging, with active participation in events like Cenex Expo, which attracts thousands of visitors and exhibitors (source: cenexgroup.nl).

Recent Developments

In recent years, Cenex has continued to assert its leadership in transport decarbonization, with CEO Robert Evans discussing the organization's vision and expectations for the future during interviews surrounding the Cenex Expo, which has become the UK's largest event for net zero and connected automated mobility innovations (source: greenfleet.net). The launch of Cenex Nederland's annual Cenex Lenteborrel in Amsterdam in 2022 marked a significant expansion for the organization, with plans for public access in 2025, further enhancing their networking and collaboration opportunities (source: cenexgroup.nl). While no major acquisitions or mergers have been reported, Cenex has maintained a strong focus on project delivery in V2G and charging innovations, with the 2025 Cenex Expo featuring live vehicle demonstrations at one of Europe's largest testing centers (source: cenexgroup.nl).

Working There

Cenex offers a variety of roles for job seekers, particularly in research, consultancy, project management, and engineering focused on low emission technologies. The organization emphasizes the importance of expertise in areas such as EVs, hydrogen, and energy modeling, with opportunities available at their Loughborough headquarters and potentially in Amsterdam for Cenex Nederland (source: leadiq.com). The company culture is characterized by its independence and mission-driven approach, prioritizing environmental impact over profit, which fosters collaboration with industry, government, and academia (source: cenex.co.uk). While specific benefits are not publicly documented, the structure supports roles that focus on outcomes and provide access to cutting-edge low-carbon technologies and global networks (source: leadiq.com).
