Technical support professionals in renewable energy diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve the hardware and software issues that keep clean energy systems generating power - from inverter faults on solar farms to SCADA communication failures on wind turbines. The IEA's World Energy Employment 2025 report counted 76 million energy sector workers globally in 2024, with applied technical roles making up over half the workforce and facing the most acute hiring shortages.
What technical support actually looks like in renewables
The term covers a broader range of work than most people assume. A technical support engineer at an inverter manufacturer like Fronius might spend the day walking a solar installer through firmware configuration over the phone. A field service technician at Vestas could be troubleshooting a pitch control system 80 metres above the North Sea. The common thread is problem-solving under pressure - these are the people who get called when something stops working, and every hour of downtime translates directly into lost revenue.
What distinguishes technical support in renewables from, say, IT helpdesk work is the physical layer. Most positions require understanding both the digital systems (SCADA, monitoring platforms, battery management software) and the electrical or mechanical hardware they control. A technician diagnosing a grid connection fault needs to read single-line diagrams, interpret protection relay data, and sometimes physically inspect switchgear - skills that take years to develop.
Who is hiring and for what
The employers posting the most technical support roles on Rejobs reflect the sector's diversity. Plug Power and sonnen recruit for hydrogen fuel cell and battery storage support, respectively. Landis+Gyr hires for smart metering and grid infrastructure. Wind OEMs like Vestas, Nordex, and KK Wind Solutions need field service technicians and remote diagnostics specialists. Octopus Energy and Zaptec focus on customer-facing energy tech support, including EV charging and smart tariff systems.
The most common job titles tell the story: field service technician dominates postings, followed by technical support engineer, service technician, and technical project manager. Berlin, London, Prague, Munich, and Dresden appear most frequently as locations - a pattern that tracks with where Europe's renewable energy manufacturing and operations clusters sit.
The skills that command a premium
SCADA fluency is the single biggest differentiator. Renewable energy operators increasingly struggle to find people who can configure, troubleshoot, and maintain supervisory control systems - a gap that the IEA reports is worsening as applied technical worker demand grew 16% between 2015 and 2022 while relevant vocational graduations increased only 9%. Cross-disciplinary expertise matters: employers prize technicians who combine electrical knowledge with software diagnostics, thermal imaging, and vibration analysis.
Inverter technology knowledge is particularly sought after as solar and storage installations scale up. Battery management systems represent another growth area, with roles requiring understanding of cell balancing, state-of-charge estimation, and thermal management protocols.
Where the field is heading
The 2.5 million applied technical positions added to the energy sector since 2019 hint at the trajectory. Over half of 700 energy firms surveyed by the IEA reported critical hiring bottlenecks, and the demographic maths is unforgiving: in grid and power plant roles, there are up to 1.7 retiring workers for every young entrant, meaning two of every three new hires by 2035 will simply replace retirees rather than expand capacity.
For technical support professionals considering renewables, the implication is straightforward: demand will outpace supply for years. The UK's Clean Energy Jobs Plan projects 860,000 clean energy jobs by 2030, with technicians among 31 priority occupations. Salaries reflect this pressure - 48% of renewable energy workers received a pay rise in 2025, with field technicians and certified installers seeing the steepest increases in regions with rapid project deployment.
