What They Do
The Kuehne Climate Center (KCC) focuses on logistics-oriented solutions for emission reduction and CO2 removal from the atmosphere. Their work is structured into three closely linked areas: researching adaptations in the transport and logistics sector for a low-carbon economy; implementing pragmatic climate projects such as sustainable refrigerated containers and green freight transport in East Africa; and building capacity in low- and middle-income countries through vocational training, university courses, and research collaborations (source: kuehne-stiftung.org, zoomtanzania.net). KCC’s mission is to accelerate climate-resilient development within logistics (Climate Action in Logistics) and through logistics systems (Logistics for Climate Action). This is achieved through applied research, thought leadership, project and consulting work, as well as training focused on countries in the Global South (source: climatechangecareers.com, corporatestaffing.co.ke). Their target markets include international trade, sustainable low-carbon development, and decarbonization of freight transport in regions such as East Africa. KCC serves public institutions, philanthropic organizations, academic institutions, industry partners, governments, development agencies, and private sector actors (source: kuehne-stiftung.org, zoomtanzania.net).
Projects & Track Record
In August 2024, the Kuehne Climate Center launched the Green Freight Support Programme in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in collaboration with Smart Freight Centre, UNEP, GIZ, and TradeMark Africa. This program provides training, emissions measurement tools, and support for transitioning to zero-emission vehicles to decarbonize freight transport in East Africa (source: zoomtanzania.net). KCC contributes its expertise to projects such as sustainable refrigerated containers, green freight transport in East Africa, supply chain resilience, and logistics for carbon dioxide removal (source: kuehne-stiftung.org). Their geographic presence includes Germany, Switzerland, Tanzania, and Kenya, with expansion in East Africa through green freight initiatives (source: zoomtanzania.net, climatechangecareers.com).
Recent Developments
On September 4, 2024, the Kuehne Climate Center announced its transformation into an independent organization led by Dr. Jörg Wiese as its first CEO. This move accelerates the focus on the intersections between logistics and climate, particularly Climate Action in Logistics and scaling Logistics for Climate Action (source: kuehne-stiftung.org). By 2025, KCC aims to establish itself as a respected player in global climate philanthropy for climate-friendly international trade (source: kuehne-stiftung.org). The Green Freight Support Programme was launched in Tanzania in August 2024 (source: zoomtanzania.net). KCC became independent in August 2024 after its founding as an initiative of the Kühne Foundation in 2023 (source: zoomtanzania.net).

The Kuehne Climate Center is hiring project managers for Green Freight Systems in East Africa, based in Nairobi, Kenya. This role includes technical advisory, project management, coordination with governments, development partners, and the private sector, as well as monitoring and evaluation of green freight initiatives (source: climatechangecareers.com, corporatestaffing.co.ke). Besides the headquarters in Hamburg, KCC maintains offices in Schindellegi, Switzerland, and Nairobi, Kenya, with programs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (source: kuehne-stiftung.org, climatechangecareers.com).
