What They Do

Peak Energy is a pioneering U.S.-based company that specializes in sodium-ion battery technology aimed at grid-scale energy storage solutions. Founded by industry veterans including Landon Mossburg and Cameron Dales, the company is committed to industrializing this innovative technology to provide a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Their mission is to reduce energy storage costs by up to 50% while enhancing reliability and safety, making them a formidable player in the energy storage market (source: peakenergy.com).

Projects & Track Record

Peak Energy has made significant strides in the energy storage sector, including the commissioning and testing of its A1 system in California in September 2024. Furthermore, the company is set to deploy the world's first passively cooled, grid-scale sodium-ion energy storage system in Colorado by August 2025. These projects highlight Peak Energy's commitment to innovation and its strategic partnerships with leading independent power producers, which will facilitate pilot deployments starting in 2025 (source: peakenergy.com).

Recent Developments

In June 2024, Peak Energy successfully secured $55 million in Series A funding, which is intended to expedite the production of sodium-ion systems and support the establishment of its first U.S. giga-scale sodium-ion battery factory, expected to open in 2027. This follows their initial launch from stealth mode in October 2023, where they raised $10 million in seed funding. These developments underscore Peak Energy's rapid growth and ambitious plans for the future (source: peakenergy.com).

Role Overview

The Technical Operations and Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and optimal performance of Peak Energy's solar PV assets across their operational lifecycle. This role covers technical validation of operating plants, O&M oversight, construction-to-operations handover (HOTO), monitoring system integration, and HSE compliance.

You will work closely with internal teams and external partners including EPC contractors, O&M providers, equipment suppliers, and monitoring vendors to protect asset value and ensure performance expectations are met.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Technical Validation of Operating Assets & Construction Sites

    • Conduct regular site visits to operating solar PV plants to verify actual performance against KPIs such as energy yield, availability, and performance ratio (PR).
    • Visit sites under development or construction to verify alignment between design drawings and on-site installation, identifying potential technical risks that may impact long-term operations.
    • Perform on-site inspections of major equipment and Balance of Plant (BOP) to verify physical condition, technical specifications, and data reliability.
  2. O&M Management & Technical Coordination

    • Support the evaluation and selection of O&M service providers, including assessment of technical capabilities, warranties, response times, recovery times, and spare parts management.
    • Review technical terms in existing and new O&M contracts, ensuring alignment with site conditions and asset performance requirements.
    • Lead technical coordination with EPC contractors, equipment suppliers, and monitoring service providers on equipment specifications, defects, and operational issues.
  3. Asset Handover (HOTO) & Technical Documentation

    • Conduct technical due diligence during plant completion and handover (HOTO), ensuring consistency between installed equipment and technical documentation.
    • Manage and consolidate technical documentation including BOQs, equipment datasheets, and monitoring/control system documentation, ensuring smooth transition from construction to operations.
    • Support the development and maintenance of standardized HOTO manuals and documentation processes.
  4. Digital Monitoring & Portfolio Support

    • Troubleshoot on-site issues related to monitoring systems, including API connectivity and data integration, by verifying communication status and identifying technical solutions.
    • Coordinate with external monitoring providers to ensure seamless integration into Peak Energy's asset management platforms.
    • Support the structuring of on-site configurations into system-based data models to improve operational visibility and efficiency.
  5. HSE & Internal Technical Governance

    • Monitor compliance with HSE standards, SOPs, and safety management systems across operational and construction sites.
    • Support HSE meetings, audits, and training activities.
    • Identify, document, and report technical risks and issues observed on-site, providing inputs for internal governance forums such as the Investment Committee (IC).
    • Provide technical insights and validation to the Country Head and management team based on on-site findings and operational data.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in solar PV plant performance analysis, O&M management, or on-site technical roles.
  • Proven ability to prepare inspection reports, acceptance test reports, and manage technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of PV performance monitoring, KPI-based performance management, and plant monitoring systems.
  • Practical knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements related to electrical inspections and authorities.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical coordination and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to negotiate, train teams, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented, and proactive problem-solving mindset.
