What They Do

Norsk Hydro's core technology focus centers on low-carbon aluminum production powered by renewable energy sources, including hydropower, wind, solar, and green hydrogen. The company specializes in aluminum recycling and extrusion, producing a variety of products such as extrusion ingots, sheet ingots, foundry alloys, and low-carbon aluminum with a carbon footprint of less than 0.5 kg CO2 per kg from 100% post-consumer scrap (source: hydro.com). Additionally, Hydro provides renewable energy solutions, generating approximately 9 TWh annually from 17 hydroelectric stations in Norway, alongside wind power purchase agreements and solar projects in Brazil (source: industrialinfo.com). The company serves diverse markets, including automotive, construction, and electrification, with notable clients such as Mercedes-Benz and LEVC for low-carbon aluminum applications (source: shell.com). Hydro's competitive edge lies in its commitment to sustainability, with Norwegian production boasting a carbon footprint 75-80% lower than the global average, and its innovative HalZero zero-emission smelting technology (source: etftrends.com).

Projects & Track Record

Norsk Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the Karmøy aluminum reduction plant and the Rødal-Suldal hydroelectric facility, which opened in 1967 to power it. The Sunndal plant is recognized as Europe's largest primary aluminum plant, while the Årdal plant produces aluminum with a carbon footprint of just 3 kg CO2/kg, utilizing 25% recycled scrap and hydropower (source: encyclopedia.com). Currently, Hydro is constructing the 48 MW Illvatn pumped-storage hydro plant in western Norway, which is expected to generate 107 GWh annually and enhance reservoir capacity for aluminum smelting operations by 2030 (source: industrialinfo.com). The company has also secured a power purchase agreement with the Fosen Vind wind farm, which will provide a total of 18 TWh of renewable energy over the coming years (source: powersystems.technology). Hydro's geographic presence spans over 14 locations across multiple countries, including Norway, Brazil, the UK, Germany, Sweden, France, and North America, showcasing its extensive aluminum value chain operations (source: worldbenchmarkingalliance.org).

Recent Developments

In 2024, Norsk Hydro commenced receiving 100% REGO-certified renewable electricity from Shell Energy's Rhyl Flats wind farm for its UK operations, which will power electric forklifts and cooling systems for lower-carbon aluminum production (source: shell.com). The construction of the Illvatn pumped hydro project marks a significant milestone, being Norway's largest in decades, with operations expected to begin in 2030 (source: industrialinfo.com). Hydro has also signed a supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz for low-carbon aluminum sourced from the Årdal plant for its CLA electric vehicle, further solidifying its position in the automotive sector (source: industrialinfo.com). Additionally, Hydro Rein is expanding its investments in Brazil, focusing on solar and wind energy to support its industrial complexes and pursue long-term green power contracts (source: powersystems.technology). The company has also achieved a significant milestone by delivering Europe's first near-zero aluminum, produced with a carbon footprint of less than 0.5 kg CO2/kg from 100% post-consumer scrap (source: etftrends.com).
