What They Do

Lumen Energy is a San Francisco-based renewable energy startup that specializes in providing a software platform designed to assist commercial real estate owners in evaluating, financing, and deploying solar and battery projects across their property portfolios at scale. The company's core technology, the Lux Engine, automates feasibility studies, financial modeling, and developer matchmaking, making it easier for clients to adopt clean energy solutions. This platform screens properties for solar viability, generates investment-grade financial reports, and activates a competitive marketplace of vetted developers for bidding (source: getlumen.com). Lumen's services are particularly targeted at large commercial real estate owners managing diverse portfolios, enabling them to implement portfolio-wide clean energy strategies without the need for per-property consultants (source: cbinsights.com). Key customers include major players like Nuveen Real Estate, Hines, and Greystar, showcasing the company's strong foothold in the commercial real estate sector.

Projects & Track Record

While specific project names and capacities are not publicly detailed, Lumen Energy primarily acts as a software broker facilitating third-party developer deployments rather than owning assets itself. The company is currently engaged in solar feasibility studies across Nuveen Real Estate’s extensive U.S. portfolio, which includes over 1,500 properties. This initiative aims to deliver actionable financing offers for viable assets, thereby enhancing the economic viability of solar installations (source: getlumen.com). Lumen is also collaborating with Hines to advance clean energy strategies and is supporting Greystar in equipping multifamily properties with solar solutions that provide cost savings and tenant benefits. These efforts highlight the company's commitment to making solar energy more accessible and economically beneficial for its clients (source: getlumen.com). The partnerships with major firms like Nuveen, Hines, and Greystar reflect Lumen's strategic alignment with industry leaders in the real estate sector.

Recent Developments

In July 2024, Lumen Energy announced a significant milestone with $11 million in Series A funding led by Lowercarbon Capital, alongside participation from other notable investors such as Ajax and Nuveen. This funding is intended to support the scaling of their platform amid rising electricity costs and the increasing demand for net-zero solutions among building owners (source: cbinsights.com). Additionally, the company launched its Auto PPA software, which automates the complexities associated with power purchase agreements, further enhancing its service offerings. Lumen also joined the Urban Land Institute’s Greenprint program, which provides access to sustainability data and networks, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability in the built environment (source: cbinsights.com). These developments indicate Lumen's proactive approach to expanding its capabilities and influence in the renewable energy sector.

Working There

Lumen Energy, as a venture-backed startup, offers a dynamic work environment with roles spanning engineering, product development, design, business development, and project finance. The company is led by experienced executives, including COO Dave Coen, who oversees engineering and product design, and other leaders with extensive backgrounds in energy finance and technology (source: zoominfo.com). Hiring is likely concentrated at their San Francisco headquarters, with potential remote opportunities available in states where they have client projects. The company culture emphasizes cross-functional collaboration, equitable clean energy transitions, and the importance of diverse and inclusive teams (source: getlumen.com). While specific benefits are not detailed in public sources, prospective employees are encouraged to inquire directly for more information regarding career opportunities and company perks.

We seek colleagues who are passionate about making real change in the built environment, excited to work at the leading edge of energy and real estate, and want to contribute to a high-performing team. Join us on our mission to profitably decarbonize buildings.

We're looking for a Marketplace Operations Lead to join our Marketplace Operations team. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role for someone who is energized by delivering great partner experiences, loves executing with precision, and is excited to help shape how a fast-growing clean energy company runs its business.

You'll report to the Head of Marketplace Operations and act as a primary liaison for our solar developer partners, who bid on renewable energy projects we originate on our platform. Internally, you'll collaborate with adjacent teams, including Sales, Finance, and Product to run many of our core processes, track performance, and help us make smarter, faster decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Build strong relationships with solar developers by supporting onboarding, platform education, and ongoing relationship management.
  • Own key marketplace operations by assembling and launching renewable energy project bid packages, following up with developers on active bids, and preparing bid review analyses and presentation materials.
  • Capture and communicate developer updates by taking notes during developer check-ins, summarizing key updates for internal teams, and managing follow-ups with developers and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Support project execution after bid selection by drafting and tracking developer agreements and projected milestone dates across the development pipeline.
  • Improve and automate recurring workflows by identifying process gaps, implementing practical AI automation solutions, and acting as the quality-control layer to ensure systems and outputs remain accurate.
  • Help our marketplace grow by expanding the ways we engage with developers and identifying new areas of opportunity for Lumen's technology.
  • Drive marketplace insights and ad hoc research by tracking key metrics for weekly readouts and supporting research on federal, state and local renewable energy policies and program updates.

About you

  • 2-4 years of experience in management consulting, customer success, renewable energy development, commercial real estate asset management, or a similar field.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high bar for accuracy.
  • Quick to learn and take ownership of new processes and unfamiliar topics with limited guidance.
  • Comfortable using new technology, including AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot, to improve efficiency and automate workflows.
  • A strong communicator with executive presence who can work effectively with renewable energy developers and real estate owners.
  • Proactive, resourceful, and comfortable in a start-up environment, with a bias for action.
  • Genuine interest in the work we do related to clean energy, real estate, and/or climate tech.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and slides is a must. Experience with tools such as HubSpot, Notion, and Hex (analytics platform) is a plus.

Why Lumen

  • Work that matters - every rooftop we convert accelerates decarbonization at scale.
  • High ownership, early on - you'll have real impact from day one, not years from now.
  • A team that moves fast and values clear thinking over politics or hierarchy.
  • Competitive salary, benefits, and equity participation.
  • A culture that embraces technology, including AI - we use new tools actively and encourage you to do the same.
  • Room to grow - we promote from within and invest in the development of our team.

Lumen Energy is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diverse perspectives and are committed to building an inclusive workplace. US work authorization required. We are unable to sponsor H1B visas at this time.
