EnergyHub

Company Overview

EnergyHub, an independent subsidiary of Alarm.com

Brooklyn, New York, United States

2007

Approximately 200 employees (source: rocketreach.co). Revenue of $19.1 million in FY 2024 (source: rocketreach.co).

What They Do

EnergyHub specializes in software technology focused on energy management, evolving from its initial development of demand response and energy efficiency solutions to enabling virtual power plants. This is achieved by integrating consumer devices such as smart thermostats, electric vehicles, EV chargers, energy storage systems, solar inverters, and water heaters with utility grids. This integration enhances reliability and supports higher penetration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind (source: rocketreach.co). The company’s primary products include a platform that aggregates Internet of Things devices into virtual power plants, allowing real-time energy use control and peak load management, which benefits over one million consumers (source: rocketreach.co). EnergyHub's services also encompass energy management systems that connect homeowners with utilities, facilitating actionable consumption reductions and grid optimization (source: cbinsights.com). The company primarily targets utilities across the United States, having grown its clientele to about 80 utilities since its inception, serving regions including Arizona, California, Oregon, the Midwest, Florida, and New England (source: cbinsights.com). Competitors include AutoGrid, BuildingIQ, and Enel X, with EnergyHub differentiating itself through its integration capabilities and a focus on patent activity in demand response (source: rocketreach.co).

Projects & Track Record

While specific completed projects are not detailed by name or capacity, EnergyHub supports large-scale utility programs, particularly those managed for utilities in the Phoenix area, which are among the largest in its portfolio (source: cbinsights.com). The company has established partnerships with approximately 80 U.S. utilities, collaborating with Alarm.com for connected home solutions (source: cbinsights.com). Its geographic presence is primarily U.S.-based, concentrated in states like Arizona, California, Oregon, Florida, and New England, with no noted international expansion (source: cbinsights.com).

Recent Developments

In the last two years, EnergyHub was highlighted in a CB Insights research brief on October 13, 2023, which emphasized its management of large utility programs, particularly in the Phoenix area (source: cbinsights.com). However, there have been no major announcements, contracts won, acquisitions, mergers, or funding rounds reported since its acquisition by Alarm.com in 2013, which totaled between $17.7 million and $33.1 million across earlier funding rounds (source: cbinsights.com). Additionally, no awards, certifications, or milestones from 2024-2025 have been documented in the available sources.

Working There

EnergyHub offers a variety of roles primarily in software development, energy management, and demand response, with support functions also available. The leadership team includes Co-Founder and Managing Director László Koncz, and the company operates under various NAICS and SIC codes related to professional services (source: rocketreach.co). Hiring occurs at the Brooklyn headquarters, where the company emphasizes partnerships with leading Internet of Things firms and scalability with utilities, although specific employee reviews or internal culture descriptions are limited (source: rocketreach.co). No specific benefits have been documented in the available data.

Job Description

As our Controller, you'll partner closely with our executive team to help build the systems and processes that strengthen the G&A backbone of the company. As an independent subsidiary business of Alarm.com, we have been a part of a public company reporting environment for the past decade, though have been largely operating with a centralized G&A function at the Alarm.com level. We're taking a meaningful step towards a decentralized model at this stage in our maturity and hiring a Controller to report directly to our CEO, with a dotted line to the Alarm.com CFO. The role will blend traditional corporate controllership responsibilities with divisional ones, relying upon and coordinating with Alarm.com finance leaders in areas such as Technical Accounting, Tax, Internal Audit, FP&A, and Investor Relations. This is an opportunity to be on the ground floor of a dedicated finance and accounting movement for a scaling SaaS business within a public company environment.

What you'll do

Accounting Operations

  • Drive an efficient and accurate monthly close process and quarterly financial reporting cadence, including identifying opportunities to accelerate close calendars, improve automation, and streamline processes.
  • Establish and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial records.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and collections team to strengthen technical skills and business acumen, fostering a culture of urgency, excellence, and problem solving.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Accounting & SEC Reporting team at Alarm.com to ensure GAAP-compliant financial records and reporting of complex accounting matters.
  • Collaborate with the commercial teams (Sales, Client Success, Client Operations, Partner Solutions) to ensure billing and accounting processes are well-defined and communicated and that all teams are aligned to supporting accounting and billing operations.

Transformation & Business Partnership

  • Partner with the Alarm.com Finance Transformation team and IT resources to evaluate, enhance, and automate accounting and billing systems and processes, driving operational efficiency and scalability. Alarm.com will be launching an ERP implementation imminently, and you will be on the frontline on behalf of EnergyHub.
  • Build and nurture trusted partnerships with business leaders, demonstrating the accounting function's strategic value and alignment with broader company goals.
  • Navigate the complex balance between customer centricity and a growth culture with stewardship of the P&L and public company reporting requirements.

Other duties as assigned.

About You

  • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within technology-focused corporate environments and/or public accounting, including exposure to both early-stage and public companies
  • Active CPA required
  • Extensive experience with multiple ERP systems and participation in ERP implementation projects
  • Proven track record implementing ERP-adjacent systems (e.g. cloud billing systems) to streamline workflows and increase efficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to build accounting functions capable of supporting scale and complexity
  • Strong command of GAAP, technical accounting, and financial reporting standards
  • Unflappable under pressure: you stay calm, clear-headed, and focused when the stakes are high
  • Curious, proactive, and solution-oriented: you're always two steps ahead
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented: nothing slips through the cracks on your watch
  • An exceptional communicator with strong emotional intelligence and sound judgment
  • Client oriented: you understand that building internal relationships and supporting client relationships underpins our success as a business
