Context

The S&EM Transversal Legal Expertise team is a functional central legal team supporting three Operational Areas (Energy Management, B2B and B2C) across a variety of businesses and geographies and 2). Transversal Legal Expertise (15+ lawyers in Paris and Brussels) is looking for a regulation and market conduct lawyer to accompany S&EM's activities in the day-to-day energy optimization and trading operations in compliance with the applicable regulatory framework. The position is a great opportunity to work hand-in-hand with operational teams and be associated with a range of activities (incl. optimization of the asset portfolio and wholesale energy markets re physical and financial products, both short-term and long-term).

Your Role

You will:

  • Provide regulatory guidance to the business on regulations impacting S&EM's activities (energy and trading) via comprehensive legal, regulatory and market conduct analyses that identify risks, issues and mitigating measures;
  • Develop strategies, internal policies and solutions to facilitate market activities/ business development/ regulatory compliance, and develop - together with other support functions and operational teams - best practices in relation to market conduct topics and wholesale energy market regulations;
  • Maintain a deep understanding of market conduct, wholesale and financial market regulations and the regulatory activities of regional and national regulators impacting S&EM's activities, incl. training operational teams on regulations impacting S&EM's activities;
  • Lead, coordinate and advise on investigations (both internal and external) and regulatory inquiries in relation to energy market conduct topics in respect of S&EM's activities such as from energy and financial regulators, market exchanges, and transport system operators;
  • Contribute to S&EM's public affairs position and lobbying strategy towards public authorities and regulators to build favorable market design in respect of market conduct issues and energy market regulation topics, incl. coordinating S&EM's contribution to national and European consultation papers on relevant market conduct and energy market regulation topics;
  • Further S&EM's interest by attending and participating in trade associations committees (e.g. EFET, EURELECTRIC, EUROGAS) and liaise with relevant competent regional and national stakeholders; and
  • Contribute to other Transversal topics.

About You

You meet all (or most of) the following criteria:

  • Qualified lawyer (preferably in Belgium or France);
  • At least 8 years of professional experience;
  • Prior experience in the energy sector;
  • Prior experience in regulatory topics and/or energy law and/or public law and/or competition law within the EU is preferred. Experience with EMIR, MIFID, MAR and REMIT is a plus;
  • Prior experience in litigation/investigations is a plus;
  • Strong legal reasoning skills;
  • Excellent presentation, analytical and drafting skills;
  • Ability to understand in details complex products and how the business functions from a legal and economical point of view;
  • Effective manager of one's time and external resources;
  • Ability to work closely with internal stakeholders;
  • Exercise sound professional judgment in identifying issues that need reference to management and/or colleagues legal experts within the business unit or the group;
  • Strong business acumen;
  • Ownership of responsibilities and managed matters;
  • Self-starter;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multinational trading environment;
  • Ability to work in a fast pace and dynamic environment;
  • Enthusiasm to learn and improve one's skills; and
  • Proficient in both French and English. Dutch is a plus.
