Position Summary

The CPS Energy Internship Program is designed to provide college students pursuing degrees in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Analytics, or related technical fields, with the skills and motivation to gain hands-on experience in the utility industry. Through the internship program, students are paired with mentors within the Power Quality & Reliability team to gain practical exposure to electric system reliability, resiliency, outage analysis, and operational improvement initiatives. The internship is intended not only to develop technical and analytical skills, but also to help interns understand the strategies, technologies, and decision-making processes used to maintain and improve grid reliability for our customers.

The Power Quality & Reliability Intern will support initiatives focused on improving electric system reliability and resiliency through data analysis, process improvement, and innovative problem-solving. Interns will collaborate with engineers, power quality specialists, and technical staff to analyze outage and power quality data. They will support the development of dashboards, tools, and reporting solutions that improve reliability tracking and operational decision-making.

As part of the internship, students will gain exposure to utility operations through collaboration and job shadowing with multiple technical groups to better understand the full lifecycle of outage response, reliability engineering, and power quality operations. Interns may assist with documenting and improving existing processes, automating reporting functions, and developing creative solutions using programming, machine learning, or data visualization tools to support reliability initiatives.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Analyzing outage, reliability, and operational data to identify trends and areas for improvement
  • Developing dashboards, visualizations, and automated reporting tools to track reliability and resiliency metrics
  • Supporting process improvement and innovation initiatives within the Power Quality & Reliability team
  • Assisting with data organization, validation, and documentation of procedures or workflows
  • Collaborating with engineers and technical staff on special projects related to system reliability and operational efficiency
  • Participating in meetings, technical discussions, and job shadowing opportunities to gain a broader understanding of utility operations
  • Providing recommendations and creative solutions to enhance current processes, tools, and reporting capabilities
  • Assists on special projects and teams as requested

Minimum Skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a related discipline.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Must currently reside within 120 miles of CPS Energy Headquarters.
