What They Do

The company has installed 1,500 megawatts of wind generation capacity and is targeting an additional 1,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2023. Their operations include traditional electric generation and natural gas distribution, alongside non-regulated energy engineering services such as wind and geothermal projects (source: csimarket.com). Alliant Energy serves over 1 million electric customers and 425,000 natural gas customers primarily in Iowa and Wisconsin, with a focus on residential, commercial, and industrial markets. The company has historically extended its services to Minnesota and Illinois, although these markets have since been divested (source: wikipedia.org). Competitively, Alliant Energy stands out as one of the largest contributors to wind energy in the Midwest, leveraging its scale in regulated utilities and significant investments in renewable energy to transition from coal to wind and solar power.
Projects & Track Record
Alliant Energy has a strong track record of notable projects, including the 200-megawatt Buffalo Creek Wind Farm located in Hampton, Iowa, which was acquired in 2007. Additionally, the company was involved in the construction of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, a 615-megawatt nuclear plant in Palo, Iowa, which was operational in the 1970s and sold in 2006 (source: wikipedia.org). The company has also developed extensive transmission infrastructure, with lines ranging from 34.5 kV to 345 kV in Iowa and Minnesota, which were sold to ITC Holdings in 2007. Ongoing projects include significant solar expansions aimed at reaching 1,000 megawatts, building on their existing 1,500-megawatt wind capacity as part of a broader clean energy initiative that includes retiring coal plants (source: csimarket.com). Alliant Energy's partnerships and client base include its utility subsidiaries that serve over 1 million electric and 425,000 gas customers, alongside non-regulated ventures that enhance its energy engineering capabilities.
Recent Developments
In the past two years, Alliant Energy has made significant strides in its renewable energy transition, achieving revenue growth to $15.52 billion by April 2025. This growth reflects the company's sustained investments in renewable energy, although no major mergers or acquisitions have been reported during this period. The company continues to expand its solar initiatives, with plans for additional projects through 2023 and beyond (source: dcfmodeling.com). Key milestones include the launch of community renewable programs and electric vehicle incentives, such as a $500 rebate for home charging stations initiated in 2016, along with free public charging available at its Madison office. These initiatives are part of Alliant Energy's commitment to supporting clean energy and enhancing customer engagement (source: wikipedia.org). While specific new contracts or awards have not been detailed, the company's scale and renewable portfolio position it favorably within the Midwest utility sector.
Working There
Alliant Energy offers a variety of roles across its utility segment, including positions in electricity and natural gas generation and distribution through its subsidiaries, IPL and WPL. The company also has opportunities in non-regulated areas such as energy engineering and corporate services, employing approximately 4,000 individuals to support these functions (source: csimarket.com). Hiring occurs at the headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin, as well as at operational sites in Beloit, Wisconsin, and various facilities in Iowa associated with IPL. The company culture emphasizes reliability, customer value, and safety, reflecting its evolution through mergers and a commitment to renewable energy transitions (source: greaterbeloitchamber.org).
