Purpose
At CEEW, we envision an electricity sector in India that provides clean, reliable and affordable electricity services to all. To pursue this vision, we undertake interventions that can lead to robust grid planning, flexible supply-side operations, financially sound and efficient power distribution companies and responsive demand from consumers. We generate evidence for change, devise and test solutions, provide implementation support to stakeholders and evaluate the impact of initiatives on the ground.
CEEW seeks to hire a suitable candidate to support the Power Markets team in informing the evolution of power sector regulations governing planning, procurement, scheduling and dispatch of electricity, and balancing services, future market design and operations, and institutional frameworks. The candidate in this role will undertake exercises to assess the need and role of new generation, storage, transmission capacities and flexible demand needs, interact with stakeholders in collecting data, understanding the system challenges and assisting them to adopt and co-develop suitable solutions, if needed, in evaluating their needs.
The researcher will undertake robust quantitative and qualitative analysis concerning result analysis, impact on market reforms, tracking developments in the energy sector, and analytically reviewing existing and draft regulations, rules, guidelines, and discussion papers.
The candidate must have a deep understanding of India's power sector, market structures and operations in India, should be aware of the technology advancements and market structures of other advanced power markets across the globe, and have demonstrable research experience. In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined below, the candidate should be prepared, as and when necessary, to take on additional responsibilities and respond to events and developments that cannot be anticipated easily.

Job Duties and Accountabilities
Research and programme assistance
- Review the latest literature on Indian and international power systems with a focus on clean energy procurement, resource adequacy, storage integration, and market reforms.
- Collect relevant data, simulate and analyse power system plans for various geographies using Microsoft Excel, Python and other tools.
- Analyse policy, regulatory, and market challenges faced by Indian states in procuring reliable, cost-effective, and clean power portfolios.
- Prepare appropriate visuals, memos, reports and presentations to brief the team and stakeholders.
- Study relevant market frameworks, power purchase agreements and guidelines to understand the gap in procurement strategies for Indian states.
- Assist the team in drafting and publishing high-value research briefs and papers
Stakeholder engagement
- Engage with relevant stakeholders to collect data, understand the system operations, existing market outlook, and debug the challenges.
- Present findings to the stakeholders periodically and update the analyses based on their inputs.
- Participate in in-person and virtual convenings to network with relevant stakeholders and understand the on-ground challenges.
Selection Criteria
Education
- A bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as electrical engineering/power systems.
- Research experience for at least 1 year is preferred.
- Coursework or exposure to power system basics, electricity markets, energy economics, or regulatory frameworks preferred.
Personality
- Experience with modelling tools such as GridPath, PyPSA, SWITCH or Plexos is preferred
- Strong analytical and research skills, particularly quantitative research skills
- Proficiency in Excel and any statistical software (R/Python/STATA) is a must
- Ability to analyse information and present it in a clear and accurate manner, both verbal and written
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to learn new tools to manage, process and drive insights from datasets
- Willingness to show initiative in order to handle unforeseen challenges
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment
