Job Description

The Design department is responsible for developing innovative, practical, and fully coordinated mechanical and electrical services solutions tailored to each project. Working closely with clients, project teams, and the BIM department, the design team transforms concepts into detailed, build-ready technical designs that meet regulatory standards, client specifications, and sustainability goals. Their work underpins the technical accuracy and efficiency of our installations, ensuring seamless integration from planning through to construction.

Role Overview

Alternative Heat is seeking a Structural Engineer to support the delivery of decarbonisation projects across the UK and Ireland.

This role will suit an engineer with a broad structural background who is comfortable working across both offsite-manufactured steelwork / plantroom structures and more general building works, including steel, masonry, concrete, timber, ground-bearing slabs and existing building assessments.

The successful candidate will work as part of the structural engineering team in Banbridge, supporting the design, review and coordination of structural works associated with decarbonisation upgrades, plant installations, modular plantrooms, builders' works openings, support frames, external gantries, rooftop plant, and associated enabling works.

The role requires strong first-principles engineering judgement, practical construction knowledge and the ability to develop buildable structural solutions for both new and existing buildings.

What You'll be Doing

Undertake structural design and assessment activities for decarbonisation projects, including plantrooms, steel support structures, gantries, pipe supports, access platforms and secondary steelwork. Assess existing buildings and structural elements for suitability to support new plant, equipment, PV systems and associated infrastructure, while designing and evaluating steel, concrete, masonry and timber components. Prepare structural calculations, reports, sketches and technical documentation, review fabrication and connection drawings, and coordinate with BIM, MEP, fabrication and site teams to deliver practical, buildable solutions. Support construction planning, installation sequencing and temporary works assessments, including lifting and stability considerations, while responding to client, contractor and Building Control queries. Carry out site inspections and surveys to identify constraints and ensure all structural solutions meet requirements for safety, buildability, maintenance and long-term performance.
