What They Do

ENERGYNEST is a Norwegian company specializing in thermal energy storage technologies. The company's core technology, the **ThermalBattery™** systems, stores energy as heat in high-performance concrete blocks that are equipped with heat transfer fluids such as thermal oil. These systems enable scalable storage of up to 12 MWhth per unit and decouple energy production from consumption time, allowing for flexible delivery as process heat or steam (Source: wikipedia.org). ENERGYNEST targets energy-intensive industries looking to replace fossil fuels and offers modular, quickly installable units that can be connected to existing thermal oil infrastructures (Source: energy-nest.com). The company has positioned itself as a leader in the decarbonization of industrial processes, with a market potential of €300 billion by 2030 (Source: hamburg-business.com).

Projects & Track Record

Notable projects by ENERGYNEST include the pilot in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, conducted from 2015 to 2017, as well as the industrial project in Sicily, Italy, realized for Eni in 2019. In 2022, the first commercial ThermalBattery™ facility was commissioned at the site of YARA International in Norway, followed by the installation of a ThermalBattery™ in February 2023 at Avery Dennison in Belgium (Source: wikipedia.org). Currently, the company is working on a significant project in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany, where the groundbreaking for the Leonhard Kurz initiative was laid on July 2, 2025. This includes an electric boiler with 3 MWe and a ThermalBattery™ with 12 MWhth, expected to be operational by mid-2026 (Source: energy-nest.com).

Recent Developments

In the past two years, ENERGYNEST has laid the groundwork for the Leonhard Kurz project in Germany, celebrated as a milestone for the electrification of industry (Source: energy-nest.com). In November 2022, the company was mentioned in discussions about technologies for the transition to renewable energy in the Financial Times, and in September 2023, it was referenced in connection with efforts for EU energy independence (Source: unreasonablegroup.com). The company has not reported any acquisitions or mergers since 2023; however, the €110 million investment from Infracapital in April 2021 contributed to commercialization (Source: hamburg-business.com).

Working There

ENERGYNEST offers positions in engineering, technology, project development, business development, and QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment). The teams work on system engineering projects from the concept phase to realization and promote a flat organizational structure that emphasizes the exchange of ideas and learning across departments (Source: energy-nest.com). Recruitment takes place at all locations, including Billingstad (Norway), Hamburg (Germany), Seville (Spain), and Rotterdam (Netherlands), and the process includes application reviews, interviews, and quick offers for suitable candidates (Source: energy-nest.com). The company culture emphasizes entrepreneurial thinking, collaboration in green technology, and sustainable practices (Source: leadersincleantech.com).

Job Description

Industrial heat accounts for nearly a quarter of global energy demand, and most of it still relies on fossil fuels. At ENERGYNEST, we're changing that.

We help industrial companies replace gas with clean, cost-competitive heat through integrated power-to-heat and thermal storage solutions. By combining engineering, energy expertise, and innovative business models, we're making industrial decarbonization commercially viable today.

Founded in 2011, ENERGYNEST is an international team of engineers, project developers, commercial experts, and problem-solvers united by one ambition: accelerating the transition to a fossil-free industry. If you enjoy tackling complex challenges, taking ownership, and building something that matters, you'll fit right in.

Why you should join our team

  • Work on a relevant challenge: decarbonizing industrial heat with a proven technology in operation
  • Join an international, growing company with a strong technical and commercial foundation
  • Flexible working model, including working from home
  • Flat hierarchies and close collaboration across teams and locations
  • Modern office in central Hamburg (Gänsemarkt)
  • Mobility & employee perks: fully covered Deutschlandticket, access to Corporate Benefits, and JobRad leasing options
  • Modern IT equipment and setup for office and remote work

What you will do

The hired engineer will own the electrical scope of our industrial energy projects from feasibility through proposal and design, with a heavy focus on driving cost-efficient technical decisions.

  • Electrical Architecture & Design: Define optimal electrical configurations (MV-LV), select and size key equipment (transformers, MV switchgear, cabling), and develop basic and detailed engineering documentation, including Single Line Diagrams (SLDs).
  • Grid Integration & Client Interface: Assess client network feasibility, interpret grid data, and design the point of connection for integrating projects into existing industrial MV networks or future renewable (PV/wind) assets.
  • Power System Studies: Conduct critical engineering evaluations, including load flow analysis, short-circuit calculations, and equipment sizing.
  • Techno-Economic Optimization: Apply strong commercial judgment to evaluate design alternatives (e.g., assessing one vs. two transformers, or LV vs. MV connections) to optimize project CAPEX and competitiveness.
  • Proposal & Supplier Support: Provide technical evaluations for ongoing project proposals, review supplier solutions, and verify that third-party equipment meets project requirements.

Your skills and experiences

We are looking for a fully autonomous, senior-level technical professional with a proven track record in medium-voltage grid connections and a strong understanding of the financial impact of engineering decisions.

  • Experience: Approximately 6-10 years of experience with a solid background working in electrical EPC contracting, substation engineering, utilities/grid companies, or renewable energy integration (PV, wind, BESS).
  • Technical Domain Expertise: Deep knowledge of medium-voltage systems (typically 10-30 kV), power transformers, MV switchgear, and electrical protection systems.
  • Software Proficiency: Essential command of AutoCAD or EPLAN for design, combined with strong, recommended capability in power systems analysis software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory or ETAP.
  • Languages: Business fluent in German & English.
