Job Description

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will develop next generation solar tracker products with emphasis on innovation. This position includes working with all levels of management, engineering, and other departments to create and select next generation technologies and products. This position is full-time and exempt. Location of this position is in Chandler, AZ.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Thought leader on mechanical engineering product improvements, technology vision, and roadmaps.
  • Ensure that product evolution and innovation meet customer needs and remains ahead of market trends and competition.
  • New product development owning parts and assemblies from concept through production implementation.
  • Vetting product concepts for customer needs, ease of installation, business cases, manufacturability, reliability, and safety.
  • Lead design review process and approve critical design decisions.
  • Obtain components/supplies/equipment to support prototype assembly and conduct preliminary OEM vendor assessment/selection.
  • Analyze different materials, techniques, manufacturing processes, design tolerances, and other factors in the developmental process.
  • Manage fabrication and testing of new designs.
  • Select the best product innovation and concept designs to bring into the product line.
  • Provide technical leadership for key engineering projects.
  • Provide regular updates to management.
  • Work cross-functionally with other engineering teams and company departments to achieve company goals.
  • Create and maintain necessary documentation for program success.
  • Perform competitive analyses.
  • Work with customer facing departments to ensure that customer feedback and experience is accounted for in product improvements.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

  • 10+ Years design experience designing electromechanical equipment with structural components, gearing, and/or drivetrains.
  • Design skills such as FMEA, DFA, DFM, design for cost.
  • Design experience using SolidWorks.
  • FEA experience using SolidWorks Simulation or ANSYS.
  • Direct experience in solar industry.
  • Must be able to thoroughly and accurately document design intent, analysis results, test results, etc., in written form.
  • Must have good organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Must communicate effectively with engineers, drafters, and others within the company.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment, interfacing with high-level internal and external leadership.
  • Experience defining and setting up tests to validate designs.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering Certification.
  • Experience with structural components applied with civil engineering experience and wind loading.
  • Experience with Stage Gate Product Development Processes
