What They Do
Endesa is a Spanish electric utility company headquartered in Madrid, primarily operating on the Iberian Peninsula. Its business focuses on electric distribution networks, power generation, and retail supply in both Spain and Portugal (source: endesa.com). The 2026-2028 strategy includes a significant investment of €5.5 billion in modernizing and digitizing the distribution network, €3 billion in renewable energy, and €900 million in electricity and gas supply for end customers (source: endesa.com). Endesa’s power generation is selective, with a special focus on wind energy and storage, while solar energy has a smaller share compared to previous plans (source: endesa.com). By 2028, the company plans to add 1,900 MW of new renewable capacity, mainly 1,500 MW of wind and batteries, targeting renewable production of 25 TWh (source: endesa.com). In 2025, Endesa had a net installed capacity of 22,616 MW, of which 11,298 MW were renewables, generating a total of 61,011 GWh (source: endesa.com).
Projects & Track Record
In July 2025, Endesa acquired 100% of Corporación Acciona Hidráulica, adding 626 MW of hydroelectric capacity across the regions of Aragón, Soria, Navarra, and Valencia, with 87% of these assets being manageable (source: endesa.com). This acquisition is part of an investment package that strengthens the weight of hydroelectric and wind assets, with renewable production expected to reach 25 TWh by the end of the 2025-2027 period (source: endesa.com). Additionally, in 2025 Endesa completed the purchase of an additional 600 MW of hydroelectric assets and finalized the full acquisition of Cetasa, fully consolidating its wind portfolio (source: investing.com). The 2026-2028 strategy also highlights the modernization and resilience of the electric grid, with €650 million financing agreed with the European Investment Bank and the Spanish Ministry of Economy to strengthen and digitize the distribution network through smart meters, advanced transformers, digital management, substations, and underground cabling in six autonomous communities (source: eib.org). Regarding the energy transition, Endesa carried out the controlled demolition of the last chimneys of the Compostilla II thermal power plant in February 2026 and the final demolition of the Litoral thermal power plant in October 2025 (source: endesa.com). It has also expanded its portfolio of long-term power purchase agreements, including a PPA signed in 2025 with Verbund Green Power Iberia for wind energy from a project in Huelva operational since 2023 (source: europawire.eu).
Recent Developments
In February 2026, Endesa reported a record EBITDA of €5,756 million and an ordinary net profit of €2,351 million for 2025, along with a historic investment plan of €10.6 billion for the 2026-2028 period, exceeding the previous plan’s €9.6 billion (source: endesa.com). In September 2025, the company agreed with the European Investment Bank on €650 million financing aimed at strengthening and digitizing Spain’s electric grids (source: eib.org). In April 2025, Endesa signed a long-term renewable energy purchase agreement with Verbund Green Power Iberia for a wind project in Huelva (source: europawire.eu). Furthermore, in 2026 the company has promoted initiatives related to biodiversity in the grid, the installation of electric vehicle charging points, and employment integration programs through its foundation, demonstrating active commitment beyond its core operations (source: endesa.com).
