Marketing and Communications jobs in renewable energy

Marketing and Communications Jobs in Renewable Energy

Marketing and communications roles in renewable energy cover brand strategy, content production, media relations, and stakeholder messaging for companies selling clean power, storage, charging infrastructure, and related services to households, businesses, and policymakers. The sector employed 16.6 million people globally in 2024, with the EU alone accounting for 1.8 million of those positions, and commercial functions have grown faster than engineering teams as installed capacity has run ahead of consumer understanding.

The work differs from generic B2B marketing in three concrete ways. First, regulatory exposure: claims about emissions reductions, lifetime carbon, and "green" attributes are legally enforceable under the EU's Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive, which member states must transpose by March 2026 and which becomes binding the following September. A loosely worded campaign is no longer a brand risk - it is a compliance risk. Second, the buyer is unusually informed. Solar installers, fleet operators, utilities, and corporate procurement teams know the cost-of-energy maths, and copy that overstates capacity factor or payback time loses credibility on first read. Third, much of the audience is policy-adjacent: communications to regulators, grid operators, and journalists shape permitting timelines and tariff outcomes that matter more than consumer impression metrics.

Where the jobs are

Hiring concentrates in the European energy capitals. Listings on Rejobs cluster heavily around Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Munich, with a long tail in Cologne, Brussels, and Prague. Utility and supplier incumbents recruit the largest teams - Vattenfall and Octopus Energy both run permanent marketing departments running into dozens of seats. Manufacturer-side hiring comes from companies like SOLARWATT, while project developers such as GP Joule hire for the harder edge of technical communications - the kind that sits closer to permitting hearings than to consumer brand.

Roles in demand

Postings cluster around four shapes:

  • Marketing Manager and Product Marketing Manager (the most common posting, often in German with the (m/w/d) suffix) own positioning for a specific tariff, product line, or service offer
  • Head of Marketing and Director of Communications sit at growth-stage developers and utilities, typically requiring sector-specific track record
  • Growth Marketing Manager and CRM Manager are performance-led roles at consumer-facing companies, especially household solar, heat pumps, and EV charging
  • Communications Manager and Officer roles cover external affairs and media relations, weighted toward policy-heavy organisations and B2B players

Adjacent specialisms with their own talent markets include Digital Marketing, Social Media Management, and Public Relations.

What the market rewards

Roughly two-thirds of renewable energy employers report talent shortages as their main growth constraint, and that pressure shows up most sharply in cross-disciplinary marketing hires. Candidates who pair commercial fluency with technical literacy - able to read a power purchase agreement, understand the difference between AC and DC capacity, or explain Scope 3 accounting to a journalist - command premiums over generalist marketers. In Germany, marketing manager base salaries in the sector sit broadly in the €55,000-€75,000 range, with sustainability-leaning roles reaching the upper €80,000s. Senior communications leadership at major utilities pays meaningfully higher, particularly in London and Berlin. Spoken German remains a near-prerequisite for DACH listings; the postings here are split roughly evenly between English-language and German-language roles, and many ask for both.
