gridX GmbH
HeadquartersMunich, Bavaria, Germany
Founded2016
SizeApproximately 200 employees (Source: rocketreach.co). Revenue of 2 million USD in 2023 (Source: rocketreach.co).
What They Do
gridX focuses on intelligent grid technologies, particularly the XENON IoT platform, which utilizes edge and cloud services to optimize the energy flows from decentralized energy sources such as solar PV systems, batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicle chargers in real-time. The solutions are modular and manufacturer-independent, meaning they are compatible with over 50 manufacturers (Source: rocketreach.co). Products and services include solutions for smart charging, home energy systems, e-mobility, virtual power plants, and intelligent energy districts, enabling dynamic energy distribution and AI-driven decarbonization (Source: freeelectronsblog.org). Target markets include Europe, where gridX operates in over 15 countries, and the customer base ranges from energy companies to fast charging operators and businesses in the e-mobility and home energy management sectors (Source: gridx.ai). Through their manufacturer-independent approach and modular scalability, gridX distinguishes itself from competitors like GE, Siemens, and Schneider Electric, positioning itself as a leading provider of intelligent energy solutions in Europe (Source: freeelectronsblog.org).
Projects & Track Record
Notable projects by gridX include the Europe-wide rollout of intelligent load management solutions for electric vehicle charging stations in collaboration with E.ON, which began in 2017 and was expanded until September 2020 (Source: fev.vc). Additionally, gridX has developed tailored solutions for companies such as Viessmann, DHL, Fastned, Soly, and ENGIE in Belgium, focusing on smart charging and home energy system management (Source: rocketreach.co). Ongoing efforts are focused on scaling the XENON platform for partners in the e-mobility sector to install more powerful charging points without grid extensions (Source: gridx.ai). The geographical presence extends across Germany as the main market and over 15 European countries, with a strong growth phase projected until 2024 (Source: rocketreach.co).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, gridX has recorded over 50% new partnerships outside Germany in 2023, including the first long-term contracts in Switzerland and Spain (Source: gridx.ai). The acquisition of a majority stake by E.ON in September 2021 has enabled new value chains; however, no further mergers or acquisitions have been recorded since 2021 (Source: fev.vc). 2023 marked a milestone in internationalization, and the selection into the Free Electrons startup program in 2021 highlighted the platform capabilities (Source: freeelectronsblog.org).
Working There
gridX offers positions in engineering, software development, product management, and human resources, with Fabienne Römer serving as the Director of HR and Culture leading the HR department (Source: rocketreach.co). The offices are located in Munich and Aachen, and the company culture emphasizes the impact on energy savings and carbon reductions, as highlighted by CEO David Balensiefen (Source: freeelectronsblog.org). The team consists of talents from companies like Google and McKinsey, fostering innovation in a growth-oriented environment (Source: gridx.ai).

Job Description
As a Junior Software Engineer on the Platforms Team, you'll play a key role in bridging the gap between external cloud ecosystems and the gridX platform. As part of the Cloud Connector team, your work is the bridge between the gridX platform and the outside world. You will build and maintain the backend services that allow us to seamlessly integrate with external energy providers. Your code will turn complex, varied external APIs into standardized, reliable connections that the rest of our engineering organization relies on. By developing robust APIs and smart integration tools, you empower gridX to onboard new cloud assets faster, making energy management seamless for our customers and platform partners alike.
Are you ready to #makeamark, #getshitdone, and build the future of energy? Apply now and join our mission!
Please note: We only accept applications from candidates who are currently located in Germany.
How you can contribute to gridX
What you'll work on
- Integrations with partners: Your primary focus is seamlessly integrating various cloud providers into our ecosystem. This involves implementing and maintaining Go services that abstract away provider-specific edge cases, allowing us to reliably gather measurements and send control commands. You'll work closely with API specs, frequently leveraging AI coding tools to accelerate your implementation and review cycles.
- Fast scaling: You'll engineer solutions for a fast-scaling platform handling around 20.000 cloud-connected assets. With our managed fleet growing over 80% the past 6 months, you'll play a critical role in designing architecture that handles heavy telemetry and real-time control at scale.
- Cross-team Collaboration: The Cloud Connector is the critical bridge connecting physical devices to gridX's wider platform architecture. You'll build the cloud integrations that link assets to our platform, ingest asset data for various services, and route real-time execution commands back to the assets via cloud providers.
Day-to-day, that means
- Implementing new cloud integrations based on API documentation, OAuth specifications, and webhook contracts.
- Evolving the integration framework, refactoring event-processing chains, migrating data stores, and shaping the abstractions that make future integrations simpler.
- Debugging distributed pipeline failures using structured logs, distributed traces, and metrics, across OAuth flows, webhook processing, and event delivery.
- Writing tests that cover provider API contracts, webhook edge cases, command delivery reliability, and distributed failure modes.
- Contributing to API specifications (TypeSpec/OpenAPI, protobuf/gRPC) that connects to downstream gridX services and external partners.
- Collaborating with cloud API teams, Product Owners, Platform Engineers, and Energy Domain Experts.
This is how you and your application stand out
What matters beyond code
- Pragmatism over perfection: You ship working software, iterate, and don't gold-plate.
- Product thinking: You care about what your code enables for users and partners, not just the code itself.
- Interest in the domain: You find renewable energy hardware fascinating if you're curious. You don't need prior energy sector expertise, but genuine interest is important.
- End-to-End ownership: You follow through from "it compiles" to "it runs in production." You embrace a "you build it, you run it" mindset, deploying, operating, and monitoring your own services on our Kubernetes cluster using automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Tech Stack: You work with Go Linux Docker Kubernetes gRPC Protocol Buffers PostgreSQL AWS CI/CD * Nix
Nice to have
- Familiarity with electrical engineering concepts (power, current, phases)
- Familiarity with running Go backend workloads in Kubernetes
- Experience with IoT or embedded-adjacent systems
- Contributions to open-source Go projects
- German language skills (team is mixed EN/DE, English is working language)
