What They Do

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) focuses on market-driven solutions aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy, and promoting electrification and resource restoration. The organization targets the significant challenge of global greenhouse gas emissions, which are largely attributed to energy production and consumption. Through rigorous research and whole-systems analysis, RMI collaborates with partners across business, government, and communities to develop actionable strategies that drive sustainable energy practices (source: mediabiasfactcheck.com). Their services include consulting, policy advisory, and the creation of innovative spin-off entities, such as the development of 'negawatts'—a concept that allows energy efficiency to be traded as a power source. RMI's commitment to innovation is evident in their historical projects, including the Hypercar prototype and the launch of Canary Media, which spun out as an independent entity in 2024 (source: rmi.org).

Projects & Track Record

RMI has a rich history of impactful projects, including the design of the Empire State Building's energy retrofit, which achieved a remarkable 38% reduction in energy use and set a benchmark for energy efficiency in the built environment. Additionally, RMI pioneered the concept of 'negawatts' in 1989, allowing for the trading of efficiency gains as power equivalents, thus avoiding the need for new power plants (source: rmi.org). The organization has also been instrumental in supporting Nigeria's clean energy planning since 2017, formalized by the establishment of a local entity in April 2024. RMI's collaboration with various branches of the US military has been ongoing since the 1980s, focusing on reducing energy use and enhancing resilience across military facilities (source: rmi.org).

Recent Developments

In April 2024, RMI took a significant step by registering an official local entity in Nigeria, aimed at scaling their energy efficiency and economic development initiatives across Africa (source: rmi.org). The organization also celebrated the successful spin-out of Canary Media as an independent clean energy journalism outlet on July 1, 2024, after three years of development under RMI's umbrella. Financially, RMI reported a total revenue of $176.5 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, reflecting a growth from $170.2 million in 2024, with program expenses reaching $131.0 million (source: rmi.org).

Working There

RMI offers a diverse range of roles across various departments, including program services, management, communications, and fundraising. The organization reported total salaries and related expenses of $111.4 million for fiscal year 2025, supporting a workforce that includes analysts, directors, and consultants (source: rmi.org). Most hiring occurs at their Boulder headquarters and Basalt offices, with opportunities for remote work available globally. RMI fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration, emphasizing data-driven decision-making and bipartisan cooperation in their projects. Employee growth has been notable, with estimates suggesting a workforce of approximately 1,600 by 2025 (source: growjo.com).
