Company Overview
Black Owners of Solar Services (B.O.S.S.)
HeadquartersWashington, DC, United States

What They Do
Black Owners of Solar Services (B.O.S.S.) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting equity and inclusion within the solar energy sector. Focusing exclusively on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, B.O.S.S. serves as the largest network of underrepresented professionals in the renewable energy field, comprising over 200 members including developers, engineers, installers, and financiers across the United States (source: blacksolar.org). The organization does not engage in the direct development or installation of solar projects; instead, it provides essential networking, advocacy, policy leadership, and capacity-building services aimed at empowering Black-owned and minority businesses in clean energy production and equitable market access (source: smartenergydecisions.com). B.O.S.S. targets a diverse range of stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, contractors, and communities seeking equitable opportunities in solar PV and energy storage, with a strong emphasis on racial justice and workforce development (source: blacksolar.org). Its mission-driven approach differentiates it from traditional for-profit solar firms, advocating for federal policy priorities that support the scaling of Black-owned solar deployment and fostering partnerships that enhance diversity within the industry (source: smartenergydecisions.com). Membership programs offer various benefits, including discounted access to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), further distinguishing B.O.S.S. in the marketplace (source: members.blacksolar.org).
Projects & Track Record
B.O.S.S. does not have a documented track record of completed solar projects, as it operates primarily as a networking and advocacy organization rather than a project developer or installer (source: highergov.com). The organization focuses on initiatives that enhance membership, workforce development, and policy influence, rather than specific construction projects (source: greenjobs.greenjobsearch.org). Notably, B.O.S.S. has established key partnerships, including a collaboration with Sol Systems in 2022, which provided funding as part of a $200,000 investment aimed at supporting diversity efforts and equitable solar access in urban areas such as Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Baltimore (source: solsystems.com). The organization’s geographic presence spans the U.S., with a strong foundation in the DC area, and it aims to increase the scale and distribution of Black-owned businesses through advocacy and events, including the upcoming Inaugural B.O.S.S. Annual Conference scheduled for November 15, 2026 (source: members.blacksolar.org).
Recent Developments
In recent developments, B.O.S.S. received a significant grant of $6.3 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance equity in clean energy business and workforce development, with the latest federal award noted on January 16, 2025 (source: content.govdelivery.com). The organization also welcomed new board members in October 2025 and has been actively hosting monthly updates and events focused on advancing BIPOC empowerment in the renewable energy sector (source: members.blacksolar.org). While no acquisitions or mergers have been reported, B.O.S.S. maintains its federal registration active until April 17, 2026, with the last update recorded on April 23, 2025 (source: highergov.com).
Working There
B.O.S.S. offers various roles primarily focused on executive leadership, strategic partnerships, membership services, and policy advocacy within the solar development sector (source: greenjobs.greenjobsearch.org). As of August 22, 2023, the organization advertised a full-time Executive Director position, which can be performed remotely from Virginia, Maryland, or Washington, DC, with a preference for candidates based in the DC area (source: greenjobs.greenjobsearch.org). The culture at B.O.S.S. emphasizes equity and inclusion, actively encouraging applications from underrepresented groups, including people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals (source: greenjobs.greenjobsearch.org). While specific employee benefits are not extensively documented, the organization does provide membership perks for affiliates and aims to foster a supportive environment for its members (source: members.blacksolar.org).
