Job description
Oceans of Energy is the first company worldwide to design, build and operate (floating) offshore solar systems in harsh open sea conditions. Our technology enables large-scale renewable energy generation at sea, relieving spatial pressure on land while accelerating the global energy transition.
As we move towards commercial roll-out, we are exploring new integrated solutions where offshore solar creates additional value through synergies with other (offshore) industries.
Internship scope
We are looking for MSc interns who are available for at least four months (starting Sept/Oct/Nov 2026) to explore the techno-economic potential of offshore solar systems combined with aquaculture systems (fish and hang culture shellfish farming) and desalination facilities, situated next to the sea.
The main objective is to understand: what does the end-user actually need, and how can offshore solar best deliver value?
The assignment can be shaped around one of two clear internship tracks. You do not need to cover both tracks; we are looking for candidates who bring depth in either the technical/system design side or the market/business side.
Example key questions you will work on
- What is the energy demand of the specific sector?
- Where are the most promising geographic markets and use cases?
- Who are the potential customers and how do they currently operate?
- What system configurations are needed?
- What are realistic cost ranges and business cases?
Two internship tracks
We are open to candidates with either of the following profiles. The two tracks are connected, but each intern will have a clear main focus area.
Track 1: Technical / Engineering
This track focuses on system design, energy modelling and technical integration:
- PV system design and sizing (PV, storage, BOS)
- Offshore integration concepts
- Energy yield and demand matching
- Techno-economic modelling
Track 2: Business Development / Strategy
This track focuses on market understanding, customer needs and business case development:
- Mapping value chains
- Identifying customer needs and pain points
- Market screening (regions, segments)
- Business case development
- Go-to-market considerations
What we offer
- A unique opportunity at the forefront of offshore solar innovation
- High level of responsibility and ownership
- Direct exposure to real commercial and technical challenges
- A dynamic, mission-driven team
- Laptop, monthly intern allowance, fun team events, BBQs
Practical
- Internship start: Fall 2026
- Duration: minimum 4 months
- Location: (Sassenheim/hybrid) - 15 min walk from station
Your profile
- MSc student (mandatory) in Sustainable Energy Technology, Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Business, Strategy or a related field
- Clear interest in offshore and renewables
- Analytical and structured thinker
- Curious and proactive ("startup mentality")
- Comfortable working independently and in a team
- Strong communication skills in English

What They Do
Oceans of Energy is a pioneer in offshore solar energy, positioning itself as the world’s first installer and operator of an offshore solar park in rough wave conditions (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The company designs, builds, installs, and manages modular floating solar energy systems specifically developed to operate in the challenging conditions of the North Sea and other coastal areas (source: northseafarmers.org). Their technology focuses exclusively on offshore solar energy, using lightweight, scalable floating structures that support weight on the water and move with the ocean’s motions (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The systems can be deployed independently or combined with offshore wind farms, offering a more bankable energy yield per surface area (source: oceansofenergy.blue). Additionally, the company pays close attention to anchoring technology and ecological research to minimize impact on the marine environment (source: oceansofenergy.blue).
Projects & Experience
Oceans of Energy’s most notable project is the world’s first offshore solar park, installed in 2019 in the North Sea, which has since withstood multiple severe storms such as Ciara, Dennis, and Bella, highlighting the robustness of their technology (source: oceansofenergy.recruitee.com) (source: northseafarmers.org). From November 2020, the company ran a demonstration program at the Offshore Test Site in plot 2, collaborating with partners like MARIN, ECN, TNO, ONEBV, and TAQA to validate floating solar designs under offshore conditions (source: northseafarmers.org). In Belgium, Oceans of Energy launched a scalable, lightweight floating solar park designed to move with ocean motions, underscoring the company’s international ambitions (source: offshore-energy.biz). The company is working on scaling its offshore solar energy systems to multiple megawatts capacity, becoming a key player in the global offshore solar energy market (source: northseafarmers.org).
Recent Developments
Over the past two years, Oceans of Energy has further strengthened its position as a market leader in offshore solar energy and established an ecological research program to monitor effects on nature and marine life (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The company completed a €15 million funding round to scale production and project development, marking a significant milestone in its growth (source: oceansofenergy.blue). Additionally, the Belgian floating solar park was launched, receiving broad coverage in sector media and highlighting the company’s international ambitions (source: offshore-energy.biz).
Working With Us
Oceans of Energy presents itself as a young and fast-growing company with an innovative culture focused on rapid prototyping and engineering for harsh offshore conditions (source: oceansofenergy.recruitee.com). The organization offers opportunities across various disciplines such as engineering, project development, operations, and ecological research, with employees collaborating with leading research institutes and industrial partners (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The main office is in Leiden, with operational activities and testing in the North Sea, providing a unique work environment for professionals interested in sustainable offshore technologies (source: northseafarmers.org).
