Job description
Oceans of Energy is pioneering offshore solar: a new renewable energy industry that unlocks ocean space for abundant, affordable clean energy in harmony with nature. Since 2016, we have grown into a thriving scale-up with world-leading offshore solar technology, a strong environmental research base and a proven track record at sea. We were the first company to operate offshore solar in high-wave offshore conditions and the first to connect offshore solar inside an offshore wind farm. Our next step is to turn growing interest from offshore wind developers, utilities, governments and project developers into qualified opportunities, signed agreements and commercial projects.
Build the Commercial Engine Behind Offshore Solar
The market for offshore solar is emerging fast. Oceans of Energy already has a strong story, proven technology, environmental credibility and an international network. What we now need is a commercially sharp professional who can convert market interest into qualified opportunities, proposals, MoUs, FEED contracts and commercial projects.
As Business Developer, you will help turn interest in offshore solar into concrete commercial opportunities. You will identify and qualify promising markets, build relationships with prospective customers, and coordinate proposals and negotiations through to agreement. Working closely with colleagues responsible for market intelligence, marketing and public affairs, and with sales engineers, you will connect customer needs with technically credible solutions. Through our innovative customer roadmap, you will turn opportunities into credible offers, support deal structuring and help build the commercial processes needed for repeatable sales execution.
Requirements
- 5+ years of commercial experience, preferably in renewable energy, offshore or infrastructure environments.
- Proven ability to qualify opportunities, structure commercial propositions and move leads through a disciplined, repeatable sales process from first interest to signed agreement.
- Experience with complex sales cycles, including proposal development, pricing, negotiations, contract preparation and stakeholder management.
- Able to translate technical project input into client value, commercial offers and clear decision-making materials. Experience working effectively with technical or engineering teams, combined with commercial, investment or project development experience, is strongly valued.
- Familiarity with feasibility studies, FEED, EPCI, tenders, MoUs or large project contracting is highly valued.
- Experience with (international) offshore wind, utility-scale solar, project developers, infrastructure investors or public-private energy projects is an advantage.
- Structured, proactive and disciplined in pipeline management, follow-up and reporting to the MT.
- Commercially sharp, hands-on and pragmatic, with excellent English communication and negotiation skills; additional languages are a plus.
Working at Oceans of Energy
You will join a young, talented and mission-driven team with a pioneering mindset. We are scaling both a technology and a market that do not yet have a standard playbook. That creates room to learn, shape processes and make a visible contribution - but it also requires comfort with uncertainty, fast learning and practical problem solving. If you enjoy building structure in a new market, working with technical teams and turning uncertainty into commercial progress, this could be the role for you.
This position is based at our headquarters in Sassenheim, near Leiden, and is available for 24-40 hours per week. We prefer candidates who are regularly present in the office and live in the Randstad area; working remotely one day per week is possible.
At Oceans of Energy, we value diversity and different perspectives. If this role excites you but you do not meet every requirement, we still encourage you to apply.

What They Do
Oceans of Energy is a pioneer in offshore solar energy, positioning itself as the world’s first installer and operator of an offshore solar park in rough wave conditions (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The company designs, builds, installs, and manages modular floating solar energy systems specifically developed to operate in the challenging conditions of the North Sea and other coastal areas (source: northseafarmers.org). Their technology focuses exclusively on offshore solar energy, using lightweight, scalable floating structures that support weight on the water and move with the ocean’s motions (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The systems can be deployed independently or combined with offshore wind farms, offering a more bankable energy yield per surface area (source: oceansofenergy.blue). Additionally, the company pays close attention to anchoring technology and ecological research to minimize impact on the marine environment (source: oceansofenergy.blue).
Projects & Experience
Oceans of Energy’s most notable project is the world’s first offshore solar park, installed in 2019 in the North Sea, which has since withstood multiple severe storms such as Ciara, Dennis, and Bella, highlighting the robustness of their technology (source: oceansofenergy.recruitee.com) (source: northseafarmers.org). From November 2020, the company ran a demonstration program at the Offshore Test Site in plot 2, collaborating with partners like MARIN, ECN, TNO, ONEBV, and TAQA to validate floating solar designs under offshore conditions (source: northseafarmers.org). In Belgium, Oceans of Energy launched a scalable, lightweight floating solar park designed to move with ocean motions, underscoring the company’s international ambitions (source: offshore-energy.biz). The company is working on scaling its offshore solar energy systems to multiple megawatts capacity, becoming a key player in the global offshore solar energy market (source: northseafarmers.org).
Recent Developments
Over the past two years, Oceans of Energy has further strengthened its position as a market leader in offshore solar energy and established an ecological research program to monitor effects on nature and marine life (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The company completed a €15 million funding round to scale production and project development, marking a significant milestone in its growth (source: oceansofenergy.blue). Additionally, the Belgian floating solar park was launched, receiving broad coverage in sector media and highlighting the company’s international ambitions (source: offshore-energy.biz).
Working With Us
Oceans of Energy presents itself as a young and fast-growing company with an innovative culture focused on rapid prototyping and engineering for harsh offshore conditions (source: oceansofenergy.recruitee.com). The organization offers opportunities across various disciplines such as engineering, project development, operations, and ecological research, with employees collaborating with leading research institutes and industrial partners (source: oceansofenergy.blue). The main office is in Leiden, with operational activities and testing in the North Sea, providing a unique work environment for professionals interested in sustainable offshore technologies (source: northseafarmers.org).
