Burlingame, United States

Founded

2004

Size

Approximately 500-1,000 employees (source: linkedin.com)

What They Do

Proterra specializes in commercial vehicle battery systems and electrification technology, focusing on medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles such as transit buses, delivery trucks, refuse vehicles, construction equipment, and other specialty applications (source: linkedin.com). Their core business includes battery packs and integrated electrification solutions designed for demanding duty cycles and harsh environments, emphasizing purpose-built designs for transit, school buses, delivery fleets, refuse fleets, and off-highway equipment (source: marketscreener.com). Proterra also developed fleet-scale charging and software solutions under Proterra Energy, offering fleet and energy management software, charging optimization, utility engagement, infrastructure planning, hardware, and installation services (source: marketscreener.com). Historically, the company was known for electric transit buses before expanding into powertrain systems and charging infrastructure for commercial fleets (source: wikipedia.org). Their vertically integrated approach combines battery hardware, control software, and system integration, differentiating them from competitors who sell standalone components (source: marketscreener.com).

Projects & Track Record

Proterra has established a significant presence in commercial vehicle electrification, with more than 2,000 commercial vehicles on the road and over 40 million service miles powered (source: linkedin.com). In 2022 alone, the company delivered 199 new transit buses and battery systems for 1,229 vehicles, demonstrating strong production and deployment capabilities (source: wikipedia.org). Their customer base spanned 62 municipal, university, airport, federal, and commercial transit agencies across 29 states, reflecting a broad U.S. footprint (source: weforum.org). Proterra's Catalyst transit platform was designed to meet nearly every U.S. transit route on a single charge, underscoring their technical innovation in electric bus technology (source: weforum.org).

Recent Developments

In August 2023, Proterra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, marking the end of its operation as an independent public vehicle manufacturer (source: wikipedia.org). By November 2023, the company’s assets were sold and divided among three separate entities: Volvo Group acquired the Proterra Powered powertrain business, Phoenix Motorcars took over the transit bus business, and Anthelion Capital Holdings purchased the energy business (source: marketscreener.com). Despite the breakup, Proterra’s battery operation continues to recruit for roles such as embedded systems software, sustaining engineering, supplier quality, buyer-planner, application engineering, plant quality, and battery management system algorithm development in Greer, South Carolina, indicating ongoing activity in electrification technology (source: linkedin.com).

Working There

Proterra’s workforce includes engineering, quality, supply chain, manufacturing, and application support roles, particularly concentrated in Greer, South Carolina, where manufacturing and engineering activities are prominent (source: linkedin.com). The Burlingame headquarters hosts advanced battery engineering, research and development, testing, finance, sales, marketing, and human resources teams, reflecting a blend of corporate and technical functions (source: proterra.com). The company culture is encapsulated by the tagline "For the Earth," emphasizing high-performance battery solutions and collaborative, customer-specific engineering approaches (source: linkedin.com).
