What They Do
Borea Construction is a full-service engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor specializing in utility-scale renewable energy projects, with a strong focus on wind farms and expanding expertise in solar and energy storage systems (source: boreaconstruction.com). The company differentiates itself by self-performing much of the construction work, which allows it to maintain tight control over cost, safety, and scheduling throughout project delivery (source: boreaconstruction.com). Their wind energy services encompass early-stage activities such as surveying, permitting, and land-use optimization, followed by comprehensive site civil works, foundations, turbine installation, electrical collection systems, transmission lines, substations, communications networks, testing, commissioning, and operations and maintenance building construction (source: boreaconstruction.com). Borea positions itself as a leader in large, complex Canadian renewable projects, delivering end-to-end solutions from concept through commissioning, and claims to have completed more projects across Canada than any other wind and solar contractor, representing about one-third of renewable energy development opportunities in the country (source: linkedin.com). The company also emphasizes a strong project management and value-engineering approach, supporting its reputation as a leading North American renewable energy construction firm (source: constructioninfocus.com).
Projects & Track Record
Borea Construction's project portfolio includes several notable wind energy projects across Canada. The Meikle Wind Energy Project in British Columbia is a 180-MW installation near Tumbler Ridge featuring 61 turbines; it was the first Canadian installation of those turbine types and was the largest wind project in British Columbia at the time (source: boreaconstruction.com). In Ontario, the Niagara Region Wind Farm comprises 77 turbines spread over a 450 km² area and was completed ahead of schedule despite challenging winter and spring thaw conditions (source: boreaconstruction.com). The Six-Pack project, also in Ontario, combined six major wind projects totaling 288 turbines and 468.5 MW capacity, involving extensive infrastructure including 170 km of roads, 100,000 m³ of concrete, 8,640 tonnes of rebar, nine substations, and 620 km of collection cable (source: boreaconstruction.com). Another significant project is the Cedar Point Wind Project in Ontario, a 100-MW wind farm where Borea constructed 33 km of soil-stabilized roads and poured 20,000 m³ of concrete (source: boreaconstruction.com). Additional projects include Sharp Hills Wind (300 MW), Hand Hills Wind (up to 145 MW), Buffalo Plains Wind Farm, and the Lanfine Wind Farm, all located in Alberta (source: eugeniuses.com). In solar energy, Borea completed Alberta's Suffield Solar Project, the province's first to use bifacial modules and single-axis trackers, featuring 90,000 solar panels with 23 MWac / 32 MWp capacity (source: constructioninfocus.com). The company also delivered Quebec's first solar project in 2020, combining the La Citière and IREQ Solar Projects with 30,360 panels and 11.8 MW combined capacity (source: constructioninfocus.com).
Recent Developments
In recent years, Borea Construction has continued its growth trajectory within Canada and expanded operations into the United States, reflecting a strategic push into broader North American markets (source: eugeniuses.com). The company has maintained an active project pipeline, regularly publishing updates on wind and solar projects such as Buffalo Plains, Hand Hills, Sharp Hills, and Lanfine (source: eugeniuses.com). Notably, in 2024, Borea expanded its service offerings to include battery energy storage systems, providing both stand-alone and integrated storage solutions to complement its renewable energy projects (source: usadentalreport.com).
Working There
Borea Construction offers a dynamic and stimulating work environment focused on quality execution within the renewable energy construction sector (source: linkedin.com).
